Would an ultra dot red dot hold up to the recoil of my 500 smith? Thanks.

Yes. I have subjected one Ultradot 30 to literally thousands of full-tilt .475 Linebaugh loads, hundreds of .500 JRH loads (also full-house), and a bunch of .416 Remington Mag rounds, and now it sits on my .500 Linebaugh. Keep in mind that all of the revolvers I just mentioned weigh considerably less than an X-frame and generate considerable recoil.

Yes indeed. They also have a lifetime warranty to go with the great price. Really hard to beat. Keep us posted!

They work as well as those costing 3 times more and stand up to more recoil. Whitworth's 475 broke the rings from recoil, but the Ultra Dot is still working perfectly years latter

Thats great to hear. Going to place the order this weekend. Gonna go with the weigand mount. Is that a wise choice for that gun? Thanks.

Yeah, I am using a Weigand on the Bisley Hunter I have. It's a very good base!

Yes they will hold up. I had one on 3 different 500 Mags, and put over 5000 rounds through them all. I put that Ultra-dot on a BFR in 45-70 and now it sits back on a 500 mag. For 8 years now that ultra dot has taken a pounding, and still works great today. They are a tough sight. I own several of the 1 inch tubes and the Ultra-dot Match dot 30mm. They hold up to the heavy recoil with no problem. I also have one on my 475 Linebaugh and 44 mag.

They have a lifetime warranty but only for the original buyer. Keep your receipt or they will not honor the warranty.

Placed the order last night. Are the rings that come with the ultradot any good or should I buy aftermarket? Thanks.

They're good rings, but they are aluminum. I've never had good luck with aluminum rings on any gun that has very much recoil.

P.S. Also the rings only have one screw on top and one on the bottom. They pinch together when you tighten the screws. It's a good design, but they are aluminum.

I have a cheap BSA red dot on my 14" 7x30 waters,- really works well for me and has held up okay.

Only problem I think there is is the size of the dot, 5 moa seems big, but I don't shoot far away, but could see a lack of precsision at long range.

Do you guys (I know you likley shoot to 100 yards and beyond) have issues and concerns with the 4 moa dot on the ultra 30?

Hi: I use the S&W / Warnes all steel weaver style base mount and rings on my standar S&W.500 8,3/8 "...a little bit heavy mount system but more strong than the aluminium one, I saw a weingad base deformed by the .500 heavy recoil and base mount screws close to fail... you will find it on S&W or Brownells sites. By the way I have a ultradot Match dot on mine, hard to believe !!!, only complain is the minimal distance needed between rings, this conditioned the base size (long) Good Luck. !!! Guille

Did the extra ports help tame some recoil? That gun looks pretty darn nice.

I don't think any porting controls the recoil on the 500 Mag, they only control muzzle rise. I have shot my 500 Mags with porting, and also with a custom made end cap with no porting whatsoever, and the felt recoil was the same to me.

I have the same experience as you Redhawk, Large caliber handguns with heavy bullets at top speed kick brake or no brake

I agree with X-Caliber, the extra holes help to the factory compensator on its task (they disipate more gases to both sides, instead only to up or to the front, maybe they aren´t so efective as the big bore muzzlebreaks, but works.....,only problem that sound is increased too shocker !!! G1

My one complaint with the .454 is how loud that caliber is. Mild to wild loadings, it doesn't matter; that thing is tough on the ears.

No argument there! I can only imagine how loud the .460 is going to be! shocker I always hunt with a set of plugs around my neck so hopefully it will be a non-issue.

It takes a second to pop them in but it is worth the extra effort IMHO.

I tested and hunted with an XVR a few years ago and the noise was ear-splitting (and that is putting it mildly!). I ended up hunting with Game Ears.
