Hi all

Well I do some handgun hunting, use my old 45 Colt. And I like it. The hole hunting feeling, stalking, getting close to the wild boar.

But, on my last trip to Texas, I did se two hunters who used muzzleloaders. WOW. But, I did not have time to talk with them....sadly.
But, maybe some here hunt with muzzleloaders?

How is it?
It sure looks interesting....So, if getting into these thing, what kind of gun do I need to look at? Are they smoothbore or rifled? Cal.?

I have one of the Thompson Center Scout pistols in .54 Caliber. I have taken several head of game with it and enjoy shooting it as well. They are quite handy and I had mine scoped for a while.

I am not up on what is available, but a goggle search should give you some ideas.

What did you take with the muzzleloader?

There are many ways one can place limits ones game taking ability.

Where I hunt pigs in TX I coulds easy shoot one with any thing I want to bow,gun,pistol ect.

I could most likey be able to spear one if i worked at it lots of pigs thick brush. I been with in a couple of feet several.

I think if I took my climbing stand down there and placed in the thick stuff over a pig trail in a day or two I would get one.

So if one wants to limit ones self have at it. I prefer modern rifles and hand guns. I like killing pigs and I like shooting my guns. I haven't got tired of it yet I stil have 50 or 60 guns I have't killed a pig with yet.

I have killed many deer with my Ruger Old Army cap and ball revolver and hundreds of deer with a flintlock rifle and round balls. A flinter pistol would be fun and it would do the job just fine. It all depends on what distance each is good for and the accuracy. My cap and ball is limited but a pistol will increase the range.
The pure round ball is death to deer. It will work fine on a pig.

I have the same pistol took it deer hunting during muzzleloading season but didnt get a shot yet.

The idea of stalking close to a deer or a hog with a flintlock pistol are to me great.
I am sure the range have to be limited, but I do think the effect will be the same as a round ball from any muzzleloader. Guess a "hunting" range will be around 30-40 yards.

Patched round balls are very effective and I use the same load in my pistol as I do in the matching carbine.

I guess a .50 cal be a good hog/deer pistol?
These flintlock pistol is really getting interesting.

For a pistol, I would consider the .54 as the smallest bore to consider for hunting.
