Does anyone know much about the 5" Raging Bull chambered for the 480 Ruger? I've been trying to locate one, but I'm not finding any. Were many of these made? Taurus lists it as a cataloged item, but discontinued. Any info would be great. Thanks!! "The atomic bomb made the prospect of future war unendurable. Thanks... But I've already combed the usual spots. Unfortunately none of them are the 5" model. On the other hand, I think I'm going to pursue locating a 4" S&W 500. They seem to be more prevalent and a pack a bit more umph "The atomic bomb made the prospect of future war unendurable. Have you fired any of these pocket cannons? 454,460,480 or 500 are not fun to shoot they hurt. The owner of Bullberry barrels has a friend who was firing his 500 when he felt one of the rounds recoiled more than the rest,he ended up with a sore wrist ,had it xrayed diagnosis 2 fractured bones .I fired 2 shots in each of the SRH in 454 casull and 480 at Raahauges Shooting Sports Fair never to fire either one of them again.I prefer the 454 casull cause I can fire 45 long colt ammo or load the casull down so it's comfortable to fire saving the hot rockets for hunting.

These "pocket rockets" were never meant to be "fun"... They're designed for serious defense when the shit hits the fan. And when that happens, I guarantee I won't even notice the recoil. Recoil is subjective. Grip design also makes a big difference. I have a 510 gnr and with loads equivalent to 500 linebaugh isn't bad at all to shoot. I can shoot it one handed. A srh in 454 OTOH is a miserable affair. My 500 SW encore with full house loads is stout, but not nearly as bad as the SRH. _____________________ Reducing the world's lead supply.....one cat at a time.

Wow! Ive shot a 5'' 454 with one hand (just to see if I could do it) and had no problems at all. It was a ported taurus so maybe that helped. With both hands, I can fire about 30 rounds well placed until fatigue kicks in.... "There are creatures here that cannot even be found in books, and I have killed them all......"

Yes recoil is subjective, and different for different people. I have a 4" 500S&W and like to shoot it. The 3" bbl(1" comp) cuts the velocity down quite abit. The Magtech 400 JSP ammo listed at 1600fps only goes 1200 in my gun. It is more pleasant to shoot then my SRH 44 mag with 330's going 1500. I picked mine up used on gunbroker for just over $600. The guy said that he sold it with a box of ammo in the morning and bought it back that afternoon with 5 rounds gone from the box. So they are not for everyone, but they can be controllable and fun to shoot. What I'm wondering is if anyone has shot the 500 JRH/ 500x1.3" in the full length 500 S&W cylinder, and did it shoot okay? kind of like shooting 458 win in the lott chamber? If you reload, then you can go up and down in performance levels. Taurus is supposed to be makeing a 500 S&W sometime. The pics look like the cylinder will be shorter than the smith so maybe it will be smaller and more comfortable to pack? I have some of those 700gn T-rex thumpers from Ranger Rick(or whatever they are called) but have not loaded and shot any yet. They should be fun.

Thanks guys!! I went and picked up my NIB 500S&W 4" yesterday. Original tag was $1199, marked down to $999. I got it for $750... I guess they have a hard time moving them in Indiana Well, this weekend should be filled with lots of "fun" at the range!! "The atomic bomb made the prospect of future war unendurable. Excellent, you should like it. The only holster I could find for it was the Galco. I ordered one and it works pretty good. It's comfortable and fits the gun well. I picked up a Lee 440gn bullet mold and have been shooting it. Full power factory loads are really not that bad to shoot in the short barrel. have fun.

Well, I'm back from a couple of trips to range, and I must say that I'm absolutely awe struck by the 500S&W!! It's got way more balls than any other handgun I've ever fired, but yet, it's so easily controllable and comfortable. I was shooting Sierra 350's over 41gr of Lil Gun... I must say that my first shot was met with quite a bit of trepidation, but I soon was put at ease. Being a professional Mechanical Engineer, I know anyone can build a handgun to fire just about anything, but to be able to build one that fires such powerful loads and still be controllable takes some serious engineering. Smith and Wesson REALLY hit one out of the park with this new platform. Two thumbs way up!!! If you haven't fired one of these, you're missing out on one of the greatest shooting experiences yet known to man BTW, I did quite a bit of digging around for a holster, and I settled on this one... Should be a winner. http://www.cowboyneeds.com/440.html "The atomic bomb made the prospect of future war unendurable.
