I am a huge fan of the 41 mag. In my experience the factory 210 loads for the 41 out penetrate the 240's in the 44. The 41 is a significant step up the food chain ladder from the 357 and has a bit less recoil than the 44 mag without giing up much or anything in the field

The cartridge deserve to be more popular, so let's hear your experience with the 41, the forgotten magnum

Yeah, I've always been more impressed with the .41 mag over the .429 mag.

I've found that my blackhawk with 210 grain nosler hollow points and lots of 2400 gives dramatic results on porcupines and groundhogs. That's as much live game as it has shot but I hope to report on whitetail after November.

41 Mags always tend to be accurate in my experience and they are rather effective on Deer. What's not to like??

You mean they still make .357's and .44's! Funny; all I ever needed was the .41 Magnum. Seems the more I shoot the other calibers, the more I like the .41. Dang, It just works. I have a few other calibers but when I think I might need a sidearm it is the .41 S&W 57 with a 6" barrel, pinned, recessed, and S serial # that gets packed. I am sure that it would be more valuable in the mint condition that I got it in but now that wouldn't be any fun would it. Matter of fact it is sitting in the truck seat as I write this. Spends most of its time there. I hope I get to wear all the blue off of it. Couldn't begin to tell you all the critters that I have shot with the .41. Bout everything from crows to steers. If you don't have one what are you waiting for.

Funny, for almost 30 years now, the 41 along with Nosler's incredbly accurate and deadly 210HP has done everything I have asked, from paper punching at 100 yards to putting bacon in the freezer. I have had Redhawks,Blackhawks, Smiths and a Dan Wesson and they have all satisfied immensely, now if I could just find a reasonably priced TC barrel !

How do you know you're a caliber .41 guy?

When you have a gun chambered for the .41 JMP.

And when you buy a box of Old Western Scrounger .41 Long Colts just for the cool graphics on the box, and you don't even have a gun to shoot them...

At any rate I agree about the accuracy. I use Cor-Bon's 210 grainers (made by Sierra I do believe) out of an old 8 3/8" S&W. I get slightly tighter groups than with my .44s. And the results on deer? You can flip a coin. I see no difference. Both do the same thing.

Note: .41 JMP = Jurras Magnum Pistol. You shoot it in something that looks like this - http://www.automagpistol.com/images/photo6.jpg. And of course there's also the .41 GNR..

The new ones have MIM triggers and hammers plus an internal lock. The new ones are not as highly valued in the market as the 'prelock' guns. Although the new guns seem to shoot well in most cases.

If memory serves I have seven 41s, and grand total of two 44s. What does that tell you about my love for the "middle magnum"?

In addition to loading, I cast as well, and have shot everything from a 190-grain full wadcutter to the 290-grain NEI-SSK bullet out of my 57s. I can do anything with a 41 you can do with a 44, I believe.

Have shot my 41 Blackhawk alongside my 44 Super Blkhwk for a couple of decades and love them both. The 41 is in a lighter gun but the recoil is lighter in general, so it was a good way for a then newbie shooter to step up from the 357 before moving to the 44. One downside in the recent past is that companies made excellent new gas check or cast bullets for hunting but load data was sparse for other than the regular jacketed types. Hodgdon's new load book/magazine (as well as their website) has a wealth of data for the .41 Mag, so if you need more data for the .41, check it out! tu2

My 41 is a Taurus tracker titanium. Shoots 293 harcast at 1050 fps and 265 hardcast at 1150 fps. Pretty potent for a light package.

If I want bigger than a 41 I get my 454 with 350's at 1350 Big Grin. (yea they can go way faster but at 1350 I still have control for quick follow up shots).

When the 41 Mag came out in the early 60's, I asked myself why....we had the 357 and the 44 magnums. I had 44's at the time (still do) and really didnt see a need for the new magnum. Why would I purchase a gun in a cartridge that filled a gap between two cartridges that performed so well? Never gave the 41 much thought after that....still dont.....I have 44 Mags. When Wesson and Ruger came out with their long cylinder DA's, I investigated the possibility of moving up to the 45 LC which became a whole new beast in those lenghtened cylinders, but, after a bit of research, I asked myself why....I have 44 Mags! In recent years manufacturers and custom gun builders have been exploiting the percieved benefits of "monster bore" handguns....huge, and overweight to dampen recoil and a burden to carry, they cannot do anything better than a cartridge that has taken every large game animal on earth...the 44 Mag...dead is dead! A revolver that is light to carry and compact (4" to 5" barrel) in 44 mag can do anything, anyone would ask of it within normal handgun ranges....from squirrel to elephant. I have no gaps to fill, and could not ask for more....or in this case, less.

On the other hand, a fella that I had known for years just loved his 41 mag. He was a good shooter and an excellent hunter.....I had much respect for him. With his "little" 41 he took moose, elk, deer, wild hogs, and even bear, and had a buffalo hunt planned, and intended to use his 41 for that hunt as well. Unfortunately he passed away before he could realize that hunt, but, I have no doubts that he would have taken his buff. He proved to me that the 41 mag was no pooch in the hands of a marksman/hunter. Did that change my mind on the performance of the 41 mag? Sure did, but, still dont own one and never will.....I have 44 mags.

When it comes to handgun calibers, I dont think its the size of the bore that matters so much as the type of bullet, the load, and the skill of the shooter that brings a cartridge to prominence. Over the years, the 41 mag has gained a loyal following, and those folks have shown us that the 41 mag is an outstanding cartridge, and very capable of taking game quickly and cleanly. For folks just getting into handgun hunting I believe the 41 mag is well worth consideration.

ill be the odd man out here. I own a couple 41 mags and had a custom 41 special for a while. I just never saw what they did that the 44 mag didnt do better. Personaly when using factory level loads ive found the recoil so close that if handed one blindfolded I couldnt tell you which i was shooting. The 44 mag is just much more versitile. My 41s rarely see the field and theres rarely a day im in the field that some sort of 44 mag isnt with me. Other then claiming your hunting with some kind of cult status gun i just dont see all the hooplaw surounding the 41. I just dont see any advantage to carrying a gun that weights more and has less power.

Lloyd, I know you said factory loads recoil the same, but assuming you handload, I would like to offer you a bit of a challenge...

Take your favorite 44 Mag load with a hard cast 240, whatever it is. It doesn't matter. Shoot six and chronograph the load.

Now take a 220-grain hard cast bullet for the 41, and load it in front of 21 grains of IMR-4227 (it is in the load books...) and a standard LP primer. Shoot and chrono six of that load.

Finally, tell me the 41 recoil equals that of the 44, then take velocities of the two and calculate muzzle energy. I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

And as for weight difference, although I haven't weighed my 4" 57 against my 4" 29, if there is over a couple ounces difference, I would be surprised...

A 41 mag without a doubt has less recoil than a 44 mag. I can shoot accurately faster with the 41 mag than I can with the 44 mag with the 41 using 210 Rem jacketed facory loads and the 44 mag using 240 grain rem factory loads. The 41 mag in the S&W M-57 and the 44 Mag in the S&W M-29. The M-29 is slighly lighter than the M-57 bcause of the lager bore diameter and cylinder holes. The 240 grain bullet at 1350 FPS and the 210 At 1340 definately kicks less
