I'm considering getting a hunting style handgun, I like the Lone eagle or a contender in a nice rifle calibre like .30-06 or .308 but how far can you shoot at large game with them? Also what would a big reveolver or even the Desert Eagle auto in .50 cal be like for hunting?

I have shot most of the hunting type specialty pistols and for long range hunting I prefer the XP-100 and the T/C Encore handguns. I have reached out to nearly 300 yards on big game with rounds like the 7mm08, 270, and even the 7.21 Tomahawk in Encore handguns. Performance is great. I have also taken many rockchucks at nearly 400 yards with the smaller of these three rounds. The Lone Eagle is an accurate handgun but I have witnessed extraction problems with these. The contender is a great handgun but is not as strong as the Encore which can handle rounds with up to 65,000 psi chamber pressures. A shooter who practices enough can easily harvest big game at ranges out to 300 yards. Which is enough for even most rifle hunters. As far as big-bore revolvers go for hunting big game, I use the 44 mag, 45 Colt(Ruger) and even the 50 A.E. chambered in a 15" Encore barrel. The two revolvers and the 50 A.E. in the D.E. are honest 100 yard guns on big game. Loaded with the correct bullet, all are powerful enough for hunting any game at these ranges save perhaps the dangerous types. My 50 A.E. load for my Encore drives the 325 gr Speer Uni-Core HP to 1925 fps, compared to 1400 fps for the factory load in the D.E. The difference on game and also recoil is amazing, but so is the accuracy of this pistol. I wouldn't hesitate to shoot anything up to the size of moose out to 150 yards with this round/gun combo. Hope this helps!! 50

Thanks Fiftydriver, I am keen on the desert eagle, also because I would like to use it on driven boar hunts, where shooting is very fast and never further than 30m usually 3 - 10 meters. I do like the idea of a handgun for taking deer and pigs at longer ranges, with a nice scope, but I'll hang back with the rang for a while I think. Would a nice 8 inch barrel, scoped .44MAG revolver be adequate for shots out to 100m? and would it be accurate enough for taking small game like cats at 100m? thanks again.

The Lone Eagle has been discontinued. So If you want one you had better buy now. Lone Eagle

50 is right. If you are serious about wanting to hunt with "handguns" (actually rifles shortened to pistols) you should go with something on the order of an XP-100. I've been around a couple of Desert Eagles and the only thing they were good at was jamming. I wouldn't have one. Especially for hunting anything close and potentially dangerous. The .44 & 41 mags are both excellent cartridges in a 6 or 8 " Smith or such, but of course probably limited to 100 yd range or less. The reason most people don't like them is they try to load them to insane levels. Forget the maximum load and just shoot what you can shoot and handle well. Bullet placement is FAR more important than squeezing out the last possible ft/lb of energy. If possible try to shoot some of these guns. (With sensible loads) Specialty guns/pistols aren't for everyone. They sound cool but most people don't like them after they get their hands on one. Look before you leap here.

If you are looking at getting a Desert Eagle take a serious look at the .440 Corbon. It's a .50 AE necked down to .44 caliber. The reason for this is better BC which equals better downrange terminal performance. It just about catches the .454 Casull. ------------------

My best shot with a pistol was a Ruger Super Redhawk 44mag 91/2 BBL I got a deer at 90yd with open sights and with a Competitor Single shot in 308 14" BBL I shot a deer at 295yds and with my Conteder in 358 JDJ 14" BBL I shot 2 deer the some day 1st at 251yds and the 2nd at 291yds. I use to shot Metallic silhouettes and I practice at 300 to 400yds all the time. Some of the Single shot pistol today shot better then many of the rifle you can buy today.

Hey I gotta get in here too! I got my only big game animal with a pistol in Alaska. I shot a big bull moose with a .357 Mag - at about six feet! Believe me ya don't wanna do it that way (he was supposed to be dead already). ------------------

The first big boar that I really began hunting with at extended handgun ranges was the 44 mag with the 300 gr XTP. This bullet over a 21.0gr charge of H-110 produces sub 3" groups out of my Ruger SRH with its 9 1/2" barrel. Shots out to 125 yards are easy on deer size targets if you shoot enough to become proficient at that range. This is not off hand shooting either, get a rest if you plan on shooting at that range. I have used my 44 Mag on gophers and rockchucks out past 100 yards with great success, so yes the round will do fine at that range. 50

A good rest and a familiar 308 will definately take big game out to 300yds. But only with practice. I'm not a big fan of hunting with auto's as you loose alot of UMPH that a hunter needs. I guess they are OK in some situations and applications. I would rather spend my money on something that would not limit me to only short range. If you're going to carry a "led sled" around with you, get one with more bite. mvm

Hi again John/Nitro, I'm assuming that you started this thread? Obviously you know that hunting with handguns in Australia is illegal with penalties of 10 years jail and/or AUS$240,000 fines. I assume you are aware of that? Ciao, Matt ------------------
