I've posted this pic and story on a couple of other sites but I figured I should share it here as well.

The buck is a three point, taken here in Alabama. He's not large by our standards, but I couldn't let him walk since I was hunting with my Kimber 10mm.

He was standing at about 45 to 50 yards when I dropped the hammer on him. I shot him with a 180 grain Gold Dot pushed by Blue Dot powder. Yeah, I know Gold Dots aren't exactly big game bullets and mine did expand too soon, but it did drop the buck. He ran about 50 to 60 yards before dropping.

I got the pistol about a year ago and have shot around 2,500 rounds out of it so far, so you could say I kind of got it figured out. I can consistently hit a milk jug at 100 yards off of a rest with my handloads.

Next time I'll try to have some 200 grain bullets loaded.

Nice shot! I like to see 10mm success stories! I like either 180 or 200 gr XTPs in my Glock. They seem to work real well. the_captain

Nice shootin'. I love the 10mm. I shoot a S&W 1076 and have a lot of fun with it. I have not taken hunting though. I also have have an Olympic Arms AR15 in 10mm. It is a hoot to shoot. I have been shooting Double Tap ammo. This is some good ammo. It shoots really hard.

Excellent, 50-60 yds is not that far to run after being hit. Sounds like it did just fine.
Congrats.

recoiljunkie, I have a 10mm also and was curious
as how fast your 180gr bullets were going to kill a deer at 100yds. I use No9 powder in my loads. Congradulations on the deer!!

Five years ago I started hunting in earnest after too many years of working too hard.

Scrounged through the safe trying to find the rings for a 2x Leupold for my .41 Mag S&W, but could not find them at all

Only pistol left in the safe that was legal to use in my state was a 40 S&W single stack 1911 set up for IPSC.

It has a Nowlin ramped bbl, great trigger job, beaver tail, mag guide, tungsten recoil rod, compensator, Colt Delta Elite slide shortened by 1/2", and was fitted with a Bushnell Holoscope red dot sight.

The pistol was built when there was some thought that IPSC might raise the caliber floor to 40 cor major. Rather than use modified magazines in it, I simply loaded 40 S&W to almost as long as 10mm. Result was a very flexible pistol that could be loaded light or very, very heavy.

The loads for which the pistol was sighted were 135 gr Nosler HPs pushed by WSF powder (which is magic for this cartridge) to 1500+ fps.

So, I set out on my hunt.

A doe came in to about 45 yards relatively early in the late afternoon. I very carefully braced the shot and squeezed the trigger. As the shot broke, the deer turned toward me ... and was stuck roughly in the middle of the chest facing me by the bullet. She literally did a front summersault, twitched and died on the spot.

Dissection showed that the projectile had effectively detonated in the upper chest. The entire engine works were mush, but aft of the diaphragm was not messed up.

Never had an animal drop any faster.

Would not use the same bullet again as it is too fragile.

Can't even imagine pointing this thinge at a person. Am MUCH more careful with it at matches!!!! An accident would have unimaginable consequences.

10Mmm or long 40 S&W built like a bank vault is more than plenty for deer.

I push my 180s just over 1300 fps using Blue Dot. However, this deer was only 45 to 50 yards away. I think picking a proper bullet would be more important than maximizing speed. A Hornady XTP would most certainly have expanded slower, allowing the bullet to punch an exit hole.

Thanks to all for the encouragement!

As an aside, don't forget that a 40 S&W out of a 16 inch carbine bbl duplicates the 10MM velocities almost exactly with factory ammo and will top it by 200 fps if you use Longshot or 800X to take advantage of the increased expansion ratio.

Sabot, check you private messages. I sent you one a while back about loading 40 caliber bullets in 454 casings. I could use that recipe again if you don't mind.

I have three contender barrels chambered in 10mm, thats how much I like this caliber. Those 10mm barrels are the most accurate pistol ctg. barrels I have for the contender. Have not tried them on deer yet though, I think my 14" with a Leupold 2x will be put into action for that purpose next year ...

It's pretty much a stock Kimber Stainless Target II. I replaced the plastic mainspring housing with a stainless one from Smith & Alexander. It also has an EGW firing pin stop, a recoil buffer, and VZ grips.

Thanks for the complements!

I actually installed their firing pin stop myself. All it takes is a little fitting and it makes a noticeable difference on 1911 pistols.
