I don't get it. Praise be to the Lord, my rock, who trains my hands for war, my fingers for battle.

If you click on the link there is a picture of a very nicely expanded JACKETED bullet. Very nicely expanded! But these work pretty well, too! "Ignorance you can correct, you can't fix stupid." Whitworth and others......That pic is of a Hornady 240 grain jacketed hollowpoint recovered from a medium-sized doe. Was a "Texas heart shot." The only slug recovered from four deer taken during the Minnesota doe season. The rest of the hits were all pass-throughs. This bullet entered the doe about an inch below, and about an inch to the left of the pooper.... Was recovered under the skin just in front of the right shoulder. Pretty fair penetration.... Of the other deer; one was killed with a head shot from the back, one with a head shot from the side, and the fourth one was taken with a more conventional behind the shoulder-through the lungs shot. All shots, (save the first described,) were pass-throughs, with large exit wounds. The two head shot deer never moved; the Texas heart shot deer nosed into the ground pushing up a huge pile of dead leaves, and the lung shot buck traveled about 15-20 very wobbly yards before crashing into a tree......... My 26 year-old shoots my model 29 quite well.... I didn't get to hunt with the new Smith this year, due to a horrendously stupid accident with a table saw. I did a super ragged rip cut right down the middle of my thumb..... Didn't stop 'till I was through the first knuckle! Luckily I live just 18 miles from the front door of the Mayo Clinic........ Even so, it was the longest drive of my life! But they sewed, and pinned me back together; and I'll be ready to go next year. I know there are quite a few hardcast big- bullet shooters on this forum..... So I thought I would "stir the pot" a bit..... Admittedly none of the deer were those monster bucks we are blessed with, up here in Minnesota. But my son, and the others in his party, are meat hunters, and their freezers are full. The bag limit was five per hunter this year. Deer numbers are way up. My S&W Model 29 Classic 8 3/8s stainless is a deer killing machine.......And that's what I bought it for.......Grant.

Good luck with the recovery. I've shot quite a few deer with the 240 XTP and don't recall recovering a single one from a deer. The Texas Heart shot must have stayed high in the body cavity to get that far forward, but it's good penetration none the less. If ignorance is bliss; there are some blissful sonofaguns around here. We know who you are, so no reason to point yourselves out.

I agree that it penetrated well. Yup, a lot of us are hardcast users, but there is always that deer caveat -- expanding bulletsa re perfectly acceptable and more than adequate on deer. I don't think you'll find anyone here who doesn't agree. Anyhow, good bullet choice for deer, good shooting (I like it when folks aren't afraid of using the Texas heart shot! Congratulations! I hope your thumb is good to go next season! "Ignorance you can correct, you can't fix stupid." JWP If stupidity hurt, a lot of people would be walking around screaming. Here's one I recovered from a mule deer doe shot at about 75 yards this year. 240 gr. XTP in a Ruger .44 Mag Super Blackhawk Bisley Hunter. Leupold 2x. Max-ish load H110. She was facing me not quite head-on. The bullet entered just above the point of the near shoulder, traveled between the shoulder and top of the rib cage until it broke the spine, at which point it continued for another 6 inches or so under the backstrap on the other side of the spine. Total penetration was around 2 feet, maybe a little more. Weight retained was about 210 gr. without the fragments shown. Jon Larsson - Hunter - Shooter - Reloader - Mostly in that order...

I don't know how you guys do it? I have recovered EVERY 240 XTP with chest hits in deer. 24 gr of 296. Maybe your load is slower! This bullet is easily the most accurate .44 bullet ever made but a quartering shot started to worry me if I had to take one. That is why I went to cast boolits. I would not hesitate to use the 300 gr XTP though. I didn't like the one hole thing and the poor blood trails with the 240. It kills like gangbusters though and I watched the deer fall. I was worried about if they got into the thick, out of sight because when I back trailed the deer, spoor was almost zero. I hate tracking one spot of blood every 20 yd's.
