Does anyone have any favorite loads for the 44 AutoMag? It's been years since I've loaded for it and lost my loading notebook several years ago. I'm ordering some Starline brass from Midway. The load info I've seen puts it around warm 44spl levels. I don't want to run any hot loads through it. I'm thinking of ordering a Ranch Dog mould for it, http://www.ranchdogoutdoors.co...e=index&cPath=1_5_12 either the TLC432-265-RF or the TLC432-300-RF

That was a wonderful gun, the first Semi for large rounds. ( I think.) It had teething problems but it worked. Those boolits should work fine and any good revolver load should do well. I have only handled one, had a chance to buy one in .44 and .357 but was broke so I had to pass.

Lar, sometime in the late 1960's early 1970's a good shooting buddy of mine had one of the Auto Mags. If I remember correctly his first ammo was from a company in Mexico marked CDM?? Usually people would use cut down and internal reamed 308 WCF cases. He know I shot and reloaded a lot of 44 mag revolver rounds, so I helped him do some reloads using H110 powder. Back then 240gr bullets were the norm and that is what he used. He stayed with jacketed bullets. I will see if I can rummage around and find the loads he used. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

Lar You must be careful with what ever loads you see for the 44 Auto Mag. It makes a BIG difference which case you use and the capacity can vairy quite a bit from, say a military 7.62x51mm case cut down to a commercial case cut down. Even if you are using the same case, different people reamed them differently. My buddy was using 308 Winchester Super X cases. Loads that are to light will not function the pistol. So, again using CAUTION: With 240gr Jacketed bullets start with 20gr of H-110, velocity should be around 1200fps. Max should be around 23.5gr of H-110 for @1650fps. With the 265 Hornady bullet, start with 18gr of H-110, velocity @1050fps. Max should be @ 20.5gr, for @1250fps. I would also recomend using a good lube on that Stainless pistol like Tetra gun grease. Hope this info helps, just procede in a cautious manner. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

Factory Wildey loaded ammo is a 240gr jacketed bullet @ 1450fps. I would not load anything hotter than that. If you can't kill it at 1450fps another 200fps won't matter. I too bought some of the Starline cases.......after paying thru the nose for 100 new Norma cases. Price and quality can't be beat.

Totally worthless post here on my part but... Kudos to you for hunting with the old boy! I have an LAR Grizzly in .45 WinMag and one day that beast of an Auto is going to sling 300gr. pills at some hogs. I shot a couple of IDPA rounds with it. I was shooting 230 gr. FMJ's at around 1500 fps. Just OutSTANDING watching the range officer duck and cover! It's fun as all get out! Regards, Robert ****************************** H4350! I do believe there is a Automag forum and some of the Original people still post information about reloading for them. I had a .44 automag in 1973 and still remember the serial number though it has long since gone to my then brother-in-law. A04596 TDE North Hollywood. It kicked like a .38 special. I am going to build a single -shot Pachmayr Dominator in the .44 or .357 AM. Have the action and the brass and dies so far. Michael

I have been shooting Auto Mags for over 20 years. 44, 41, 357, and 30. Most guys run 19-22grains of H110 behind a 240 grain bullet. The Auto Mag forum is here....... http://www.amtguns.info/forum_topics.asp?FID=1

I got in on the initial order of Automags many, many years ago. SS# A00524. Has my initials factory cut in the back of the magazine well. Also bought a 10.5" B&B Sales .357 AMP top end. THAT is a cannon! Hunted it a bit. Still have a pile of unfired CDM ammo. Need to have the mags welded as they cracked in the back ... or replace them. Thanks for the AMT forum link!
