I was wondering if the Pedersoli 20 gauge Howdah can legally have choke tube installed and used for rabbit hunting. From the Feds point of view. What is the exact limitation around too short barrel shotguns? Muzzleloders exempt?

The law is screwed up. You can make a pistol into a rifle but you can't make a rifle into a pistol. Same with a shotgun, shorten a shotgun and you might wind up in jail but you can make a shotgun pistol.
Black powder muzzle loaders don't seem to have restrictions.
A company will start with a pistol in either cartridge or shotgun, then make a carbine out of it. Then a full rifle, shotgun or muzzle loader.
Since you can buy a pistol for shotgun shells, I see no reason you can't hunt rabbits with your gun.

This is NOT true. The only shot firing pistols are guns like 45 colt, that coincidentally accepts 410 shot shells. NOBODY can build a 20 gauge hand gun for 20 ga shells. I would have one now, if they did. HR built a handgun in 12 ga long-long ago and it requires a special federal permit to own.

But, then you do have the Lemat revolver, which is definately got a percussion shot barrel in a handgun. I forgot about those.

My concern is that the howdah was designed for round ball. Cabela calls it a 20 ga. My concern is addition of choke tubes changes the use from ball to shot. I dont know? Maybe I am paranoid, but I cannot help it I am a gun owner in the USA. Is the Cabala/Pedersoli Howdah consider a shotgun?

I did not buy one yet, I am just thinking this could handy in the heavy brush and allow me a little better balance shotgun when out in the open. More classy more power than a 410 contender.

I would think that you're gonna have to call your state's game and fish dept. to get a hard and fast answer on this one. I'd ask for the answer in some literature that you can carry with you, as a field agent may not be aware of the regs in this case, and won't likely take your word for it.

Incidentally, why not just carry a .22 for rabbit and avoid the headache?

I can not hit a rabbit on the run with a 22.

My first concern is the Federal. Since we all live in USA (well 95%) like to hear what some of the resident dealers and xperts here know.

I considered getting one but never did,the reason you can own it is its a muzzleloader/frontstuffer,if it would chamber reguler shotgun shells then it would be illegal is what i understood...you can own one no problems...the 20ga. is the one i wanted too..

I think you are correct, seems as if they have to have rifling---another stupid law. But he is talking a muzzle loader and I don't think it would apply.
A question, is the Judge rifled?

While not as effective as a 20ga handgun, i have had good success taking small game with Speer 44 Mag Shotshells.

Killed 2 squirrels last weekend with them.

Fourbore, on the H&R hangun you speak of they made .410 ones also. I saw one at my local gun dealer w/ the FFL exemption paperwork to go w/ it. I believe it went for over $1000 as it was told to me that there were less than 10 in existance.

I own and shoot a 20/20 Pedersoli Howdah.
Quite a hoot with 70gr FFg and tightly patched roundball, accurate too - mine puts them right next to each other and right on the bead at 30 yards.

The question hasn't been definitely answered in this thread though.
There are two things you need to do to get a solid answer to your question.
First thing is you need to call the BATFE and ask if what you propose to do is legal in the first place.
The next call you need to make is to your state's fish/game department and see if hunting with a two-barrel muzzle loader is legal in your area.

If the first one checks out, and the fish/game dept is ok with it - you're good to go.
The phone calls should be pleasant and easy.
I've had numerous conversations with the BATFE on numerous different matters in the past and was pleased with the conversations each time.

Cheers

Also -

Consider jug-choking the thing instead of running choke tubes.
It'll be much easier to load and clean.
