I posted this on the hog hunting forum, but if you don't visit there, here are a couple of photos of the hog I shot in Florida a couple of weeks ago with my 7.5-inch Ruger SRH in .454 Casull. The loads are by Double Tap ammo and they feature a WFN hardcast boolit at a purported 1400 fps. They shoot really accurately in my SRH, and they kill on both ends! The boar went just over 200 lbs and I shot him moving away from me at about 20 yards quartering away. Complete pass through.

Have you tried shooting groups at 50 or 100 yds or beyond?
I tried loading some 405s in my Raging Bull and couldn't get them to stabilize. I had many go through the target sideways. I tried velocities from around 1050-1500 with no luck.(don't try to go to 1500, it was way too hot and I never should have gone there)
Nice Hog BTW.
I'm hopeing to go hog hunting in Arkansas this summer sometime. I'd like to see if I can get a good load to shoot out of the 70 cal Howdah. I've made brass and shot it a few times, but never did spend the time to wring it out.

I haven't shot it beyond 50 yards, but at 50 it's accuracy is good. Do you know what the twist rate is on the Raging Bull? The SRH doesn't seem to have any trouble stabilizing the 400 grainers. I tried some 360 grainers and they shot really well too. 1500 fps! That's gotta kick! These 400s at 1400 don't let you forget that they are there!

BTW -- the Howdah is very cool!

I finally measured the twist on the Raging Bull 454. It made a 1/8th turn in 4 inches, or 32" twist. I put a patch on a bristle brush with a cleaning rod that the handle spins freeley. I checked to make sure the brush wasn't turning. I checked it many times up and down and it always came back to the same spot. So I'm pretty sure the 32" twist is an accurate measurement.
That's probably why it wouldn't stabilize the 405gn bullets. I thought I read somewhere that the Taurus was supposed to be 20". It does shoot 320-350gn bullets good though. I haven't checked it past 100yds though.

WOW, if you think the measurement is right, it is the slowest revolver twist I ever heard of. You do need 1 in 20 for heavy boolits, even 1 in 24 is starting to get too slow. Short barrels are really tough to measure. Working with less then half a turn on the rod makes it worse. Like splitting hairs.

Had 2 Casulls, and can tell you that the 400s are too long for the twist of the gun for long range stability. Also will tumble in heavy game. I would go down to a 340 gr. LFN LBT. Seems to be the ultimate balance point for these guns. Also is less expensive to get .45 Colt cylinder and have bullet mould built with crimp groove set so meplate of bullet is just short of cylinder end. You can put same amount of powder in case as overall lenth will be the same, but brass is a lot cheaper.

Well, the 360s are definitely more accurate than the 400s, but since I got my .475 Linebaugh back from Jack Huntington, I haven't played much with my Casull. I will start some load development for it later in the year. But for now, the .475 is getting all of my attention.......
