Personally.... I'm impressed.

It shoots 454 and 45LC for reduced load shooting and utilizes the X Frame that the 500S&W made famous.

Anyone have any idea what the ballistics look like of this round? Just curious.

2,300 fps with a 200 grain slug (we'll see how the forcing cones hold-up). Personally, I think the round is better suited for 300 - 350 grain bullets.

Lee -- do you know what it'll do with a heavier bullet or is the 200 grn loading the only thing they are talking about right now? I would think that 300 to 350 grns would be something to talk about rather than a 200 grn loading. I'm sure an "ordinary" Casull could push a 200 grn bullet pretty fast as well. Really curious. Thanks for the info.

Just a guess, but out of an 8" tube it should be able to push 300s between 1,900 and 2,000 fps.

1,794 fps with a 300 isn't beating the Casull by much......just goes to prove that you can only burn so much powder in pistol length barrels.

The 460 was really designed for 200 grain class bullets moving FAST.

More energy at 300 yards than a 44 mag at the muzzle...

Maximun point-blank range of 250 yards...

They say the new 460 S&W mag can shoot to 200 yds well so can the S&W 500 with the 270 gr bullets and the 500 also shoots the 320 gr at over 1800 fps and the 400 gr at over 1600 fps and the 500 gr bullet at 1419 fps. So it doesn't show me much just a smaller bullet going a little slower in most cases.

Think f-l-a-t-t-e-r t-r-a-g-e-c-t-o-r-y.
50 yards extra range is alot for a revolver when 200 has ALREADY PASSED.

Better yet, read the article.

I have read all about the 460 S&W Mag and I did not see anything about 250 yds 200yds yes. I have nothing against the 460. Facts are facts. Yes I know it can shoot the 200 gr bullet at about 2345 fps well the 500 can shoot the 270gr bullet at 2034 fps heaver bullet alittle slower. If they made a 200 gr bullet for the 500
I'm sure it could keep up. I wish you all the luck with your 460. Have fun.

Shooting Times, March 2005, page 37, second sentence:
"Imagine a .45-caliber revolver cartridge that gives a maximum point-blank range of 250 yards for deer hunting."
You musta missed it...

Think sectional density and B.C. along with trajectory. Bullets that are as fat as they are long don't go as far as long skinny ones. Sorry.

The 500 gr bullets are tapered. I know all about BC When I shoot my 338 RUM the bullets I shoot are made by Serria with a very high BC also. The 500's bullets BC isn't known at least I don't know it. Is the 460's bullets made by Serria? That long slender tapered bullet.

The 500 has alot of stopping power carries high numbers in foot pounds. I mean it can stop a grizzley bear or a black bear. I guess we'll have to wait and see what the 460 can do. I'm taking my 500 bear hunting in March thats what is planned. I hope you injoy your 460 when you get it.

What does "Gain Twist Rifled Barrel for Superb Accuracy" mean? Is the twist such that it will handle bullets much heavier then 200 gr? Don't get me wrong, fast and light has it's place. A 250 yrd gun I could use in shotgun zone for whitetail would be very tempting. It's just not a grizzly gun like the 500. Maybe that would be a good thing!

The article had bullets up 395g @ 1645fps = 2374 ft/lbs.
The gain twist rifling was said to help with the torque on the gun and forces on the bullet when the bullet exits the cylinder and enters the rifling. I have shot some heavy (300+) loads in my 44 and I felt the "twist of the wrist." Never thought about it before.

Supposedly S&W tested guns with and without gain twist rifling. With was better.

Bump

Thinking this may be a good for me.
I am looking for a straight walled cartridge to hunt deer with.
I would consider it a general gun to take to the woods. There are a few black bears, LOTS of snakes, no Griz in my wood.

I really like the idea of shooting 45LC, 454, and 460.
Is the gun just too heavy and I will not use it for longer hikes (like my rifles).

I,ve been wondering about it also .... There is nothing like the versatility of being able to use inexpensive 45 Colt blasting ammo and the 454 ammo is no slouch .... With the 395 gr bullet @ over 1600 fps it is the equal of some of the heavier loads out of a Marlin Guide gun , which is a very tried and proven combo ... I think mayby with the 4 or 6 inch barrel it would be not too bad to pack around shooting a say 335 gr bullet or there abouts @ 1600 fps would be very useful and not unmanageable .... I don,t know if the BFR has a gain twist barrel or not ...?????

.If it can,t be grown , its gotta be mined ....

S&W is the only one with the gain twist barrel. The gain twist barrel was designed for the faster lightweight bullets, but still works well with heavier bullets.

For a commercially available hunting handgun with all around versatility, the 460XVM has to be about as good as you'll find anywhere. With the progressive twists in rifling and the X frame, it is a superbly stable shooting platform designed to reach out well past 200 yards and take deer sized animals. The ability to shoot the .45 and the .454 only add to its legacy. Had it come out before the .500 S&W Mag, I'm not sure that gun would be marketed. I have both. The .500 is a serious gun while the .460 fits into the realm of a fun gun to shoot.

I suckered, bought one of their Performance Center versions with 10.5" barrel last week. Couldn't wait to test drive it so bought some Lee dies and some brass. Darn it Frowner, the sizer die had the carbide ring busted when I got it home. Sent it back to Lee yesterday as the local gun shop only had one set in stock. Will have to wait a few more days to get it up and running. Wish I'd got on the i-net and ordered some Redding or RCBS dies now.

X2 ~ Recently purchase a set of LEE's in 480/475L only to find the ring busted up. Looked like it was installed backwards during manufacture as it was tapered wrong. Called to LEE and the persons voice went cold as I explained the problem ~ So I had the inet source to handle the solution.

The biggest draw back of the S&W 460 Mag is the muzzle flash and concussion. I know so many people that just don't like all the flash.

As you say, the recoil is not bad at all.
