so....i got some bullets in from double tap ammo and since my son just got his bfr 454 in figured it'd be a great day at the range. me and a friend that just got in his srh 454 headed out with 180 rounds of ammo. we loaded a hundred of beartooth's 310gr loads. the two loads were one with H110 and one with trailboss. both very accurate and the trailboss load obviously had a much higher poi. the hotter h110 load was stiff but not bad and shot around an inch at 25 yards offhand if i did my job. my new srh 454 shot great and is a very pleasant gun to shoot. nice and accurate as well but the trigger limits it a bit versus the FA. my son shot well with his bfr. he always does. he shot several of the double tap 400 grain loads which shoot well out of this gun. he'd group 3 very very close together almost same hole and then the next two would be fliers and be about 4-6" apart. well, then i took out the new alaskan which i must say is much much more comfortable to shoot than i had thought it would be. handled all the above loads fine, the 400's were stout but manageable but........... all of the heavy double tap loads were grouping great at very very accurate but the last 2 would open up everytime. so we threw some in the bfr and finally a 335 grain load tied up the cylinder. hoping to use the bfr and see if the bullets were unseating without tying it up but was able to get the cylinder out just fine and reseat the bullet. turns out in EVERY gun, each of the rounds would pull crimp. never had this happen before from them. the only double tap loads that didn't were the barnes xpb rounds which shot great. comparing the hardcast rounds to the reloads i did showed the double tap rounds weren't crimped nearly as agressively as my reloads which didn't jump crimp even when coupled with the 400 grain loads in the alaskan. too bad, the rounds were very very accurate until the last few would start to unseat.

Double Tap has a good crimp but might be lacking in case tension. Crimp is not the save all.

I had this same problem recently with both the 335 grain and 360 grain loads pulling crimp. They tied the gun I was shooting up tight (and no, it wasn't the fault of the gun). I wasn't very happy to say the least as I have had luck with a variety of ammo from DT. I called the owner about it last week and he is looking into this issue and taking it seriously IMHO. I will tell him about your problems with the ammo as well when I call him tomorrow (following up). Oddly enough, to my bewilderment, I switched to CorBon's 325 grain jacketed flat points and had two pull crimp on the very first shot! Am I having a run of bad luck???? i don't know what the deal is. i think double tap, if they fix the issue, could own the market with their prices. offer two levels of ammo, something moderate and the hot loads they offer. i'm gonna call as well, i've talked to him before and he was real nice, or at least the guy i talked to was. interestingly enough, the 400's weren't the worst offender. bfr, good point, my rcbs dies create more case tension than other dies and i use them for this reason. i've run 345 grain loads out of my 7.5" FA at almost 1800fps average and not had them pull crimp.

I have had all of the expander plugs turned down for my +.40 bores for this very reason.
