240 gr Sierra JHC for Whitetails?

Was digging through some boxes of stuff purchased a LONG time ago and came across one with projectiles. Included three boxes of 44 cal 240 gr Sierra JHCs.

Wondering if these would provide a decent balance of penetration with good expansion if used on whitetails. They can get to between 200 and 250 pounds here.

Any opinions?

Mike

Mike I have killed several deer with the Sierra 240 JHC over 24gr of H 110, and 22.5gr of [old]2400, out of my Ruger Deerstalker rifle back when I had it.

It worked great, I never recovered a bullet, all gave complete penetration.

I have used the 240 Sierra JHC pushed by 23 gr. of 296 out of several Ruger and S&W revolvers, and 24 gr out of a pair of FA revolvers to take numerous deer, hogs, a pair of mountain lions, and quite a bit of similar size game. It's been my favorite bullet in a .44 for more than 25 years for game that size.

I used the 240 Sierra for many years over 24.0 gr. WW296. It works O.K., but is very hard and slow to expand. A much better alternative now is the Rem. 240 gr. HP. Much softer, faster expansion, and a lot more damage.

I am sure they will work fine as long as you put'em in the right spot.tu2

I prefer heavier bullets, and more so when the deer are larger bodied as you derscribed, a little insurance does't hurt.

It your are curious on performance and how the bullet will hold together, stack up some news paper and soak it over night, and shoot a few into that, will give you a very good representation of the bullets performance.

I agree, the Remington 240 SJHP[Scalloped Jacketed Hollowpoint] is a good bullet if you want expansion, especially for the handgun.

I have killed a lot of deer with a 44 Mag rifle with a lot of different 240gr bullets. Including several with the Remington 240 gr SJHP, and their 240gr SP as well.

I have never recovered one and they all killed like the Hammer of Thor.

Same results with the handgun including 240/250gr Cast bullets.

I have killed deer with everything from the 223, up through the 308, 300 Mag, 9,3x74R, 375H&H, 450/400 and the 450 No2.

The 44 Mag kills them out to 125 yards as good as ANYTHING. IMHO of course.

Hi. Were there any problems with your H110 load in your rifle? Any comments?

Thanks.

I agree, it'll do the job just fine.

No no problems with the H110 load in rifle or handgun/

I have always loaded all of my full power 44 mag ammo so it could be used in rifle or handgun.

The exception being of course lead bullets in the Ruger, less than full power loads in the Ruger and SWC lead bullets in the levers.

The Sierra 240 JHC is made with a 1.5% antimony core and ios designed more for penetration than expansion. They will still take deer cleanly IME

Mike,
Thought you were a .41 shooter?

I was digging through a box of stuff donated when my wife's boss retired and his wife decided that he now had time to clean out the garage. I found this box of bullets:

I may just load some up for old times sake. Smiler

That bullet is also know as the Speer 1/2 jacket. Those were very good bullets IME

I agree, 475, those 1/2 jackets were good bullets-- more economical than full jackets and reliable expansion.
