I'm buying the UltraDot 30mm RedDot sight at the suggestion of many on this board for my 45 LC Ruger NMBH. I just want to make sure I getting a good mount. Would the Weaver work well. Part # 48635?

I used this mount on my NMBH in 45colt. I have to say that the only draw back was the fact that my red dot site (with integeral ring clamps) didn't have enough adjustment to fit the slots in the base. I had to take the base to work and machine another slot in between the two existing ones. Other than that the mount has preformed flawlessly, and I've put A LOT of heavy loads through it. In fact, I just recently had the cast aluminum grip frame fracture right at the contact points with the cylinder frame. I'm currently waiting for a stainless grip frame so I don't have to worry about breaking another one.

If I was going to buy a base it would be a Weigand. It is almost a Picatinny with a lot of grooves.

BFR,

I was just checking out the Weigand. Doesn't that mount require drilling and taping?$$$$

Does the Weaver require drilling and taping?

I mounted a scope on my Ruger 45 Colt, and the mount was drilled and tapped. I don't think anything else will do with a gun that can generate the amount of recoil that max loads will generate.

No machine work required for the weaver.

The Weaver base utillizes the taped hole for the rear site and "believe it or not" a barrel clamp. I honestly didn't think this thing would be worth a shit, but I was wrong! It's held it's zero for well over 400 full bore loads with the red dot. Then I put a Weaver 2.5-8x 28mm handgun scope on it, and sighted it in @100yds. Was able to print several groups in the 4-5" range off of a bench. Think I can do better but the gripframe broke before I got a chance to do a triger job on it! That's done now, but I'm getting real impatient waiting on the new grip frame.

Long ago I installed a Weaver on my .44 SBH. Recoil would slam the clamp edges into the barrel and marred it no matter how tight I made it. I tried brass shim stock at the lower edges and the clamp cut the brass under recoil. Good thing is was stainless and I was able to clean it up.
Get the gun drilled and tapped and put a proper base on it. I do my own, just need a drill press but I have done it by hand too. Locate the hole perfectly and it is no big deal.
Bases and scopes take so much force that I could not keep the base tight on my .475 with red Loc-Tite and Loc-Tite primer. I had to use Accra glass to glue the base to the gun and also glue in the screws.
Any base or mount that clamps to a gun is going to mar something unless you shoot those pipsqueak loads that kick like a .22.

I do not know what the new Weaver base is. It might be a drill and tap style instead of the clamp junk. I need to find a picture of it.

I had an similar experience to BFR with the Weaver scope mount. The barrel clamp marred the finish on my Colt Python. I would suggest doing it right the first time.

I got the Ultradot for my S&W 629 Light Hunter. The 629 comes with the base.

Unfortunately the rings supplied with the Ultradot are not so good and I replaced them with a couple of Warne Maxima Low.

I use Warne rings on my .475 but I ran out for my 45-70 so I put the Ultra Dot rings on it and they are working just fine.
They should work OK on the .45.

If you are using a scope on anything bigger than 357 Mag, it should be drilled and tapped. The barrel clamp and others are not as strong. I like and use Leupold and Weigand mounts and rings..

If you're going to make a hole, make it a big one.
