I have put 50 rounds with iron sights using 200 grain Sierra TMJ's. I have loaded some Hornaday 240 grn Mag hollow point with 45 grains of H110. Will sight in the scope tomorrow.

While the recoil is stout, it is very managable.I suspect the 240 grn Hornaday's will be a little stronger.

What a great looking set up you have there. I have a couple questions about your scope mount. I do not not mean to criticise.

In these pages I have read that some would use at least 3 rings. I shoot a TRB 44 with 2 rings and have no trouble with the scope moving but the 240s I shoot are probably at half the speed of a 460. In my opinion if you don't need a third ring why clutter the classic simplicity of your set up.

I have also read that butting a ring up against the scope saddle can cause the scope to fail.

Based on the fact that you own an XVR, I would guess that you have much more experience with scoped big bore revolvers than I do, what are your thoughts on this?

Thanks for your patience with a relative newby.

Taurus Bill,

The leupold mount is I believe the best mount for heavy recoiling handguns. The only way to keep the scope from sliding is to mount the scope against the saddle or turret. I have used other mounts and their performance is lacking in my opinion for the simple reason the scope rings(yes I used three) cut into the aluminum base and ruined it. This was on a 378 GNR contender barrel.

I don't know if they are available for the X Frame, but TSOB and Lovell both make mounts that are far superior to the Leupold offering. They're about 3X the price but a relatively cheap piece of insurance, IMHO.

Not so! The scope was mounted by a Shop that is very experienced with big thumpers. I will ask them about this and the need for three rings.

Juggernaut76, If you will read I mentioned the tsob base in my post. My contender almost destroyed it. However I have a 10" 500 Maximum barrel that the Leupold base is on and I have no problems out of it. Im not saying the tsob are pieces of !@#$ but I wouldnt put one on a gun I need to be reliable. I look at it like this, If I go hunting I take a spare scope just in case of Murphy"s law. If the scope breaks then that is what a warranty is for. I ruined two burris 2-7x's on the contender with the tsob base and am using a bushnell trophy on the Maximum barrel and it stays spot on.

JBoutfishn, I have the Leupold mounting base and rings on my Freedom Arms 555. I am shooting 325 grain at about 1400 fps and have never had a problem with my 2x Leupold moving or coming apart.
I also mount the scope against the forward ring, never been a issue in the last five or so years I have had it.
I think your rig will work just fine as set up. thumb
As far as the T'SOB mount with three rings, I have one on my T/C and never had a issue from it either.

Well, I put 100 rounds through the 460 today, and the scope is "functioning within normal parameters" dancing

The loads were not super hot, but 45 grains H110 pushing 240gr Hornaday XTP MAGs sure gets your attention.

Still no pigs, but things are working out well.

I am shooting 2" groups at 100 yds and totally pleased with the setup.

I have used the t'sob base and three ring outfit for all of my contender larger chamberings including a 45-70 and 309jdj and have never had a problem. Of what problems are you speaking of with the t'sob mounting?

This is a brand name for a scope mount that has three rings instead of two,for heavy recoil firearms.
