How many folks here have used these on hogs? Going south in a few weeks, and acquired a box of these. Older box, still advertises 1250 FPS on the box. Figured these would do fine out of a SRH 44. Tried to find penetration tests for these rounds, but the net' appears relatively void of any "hard " facts on these rounds. Found alot of testemonials, but no documentation on penetration testing. I assume they'll whistle right on through most hogs, but any experiences good or bad would be nice to hear. Thanks Mike

Put the bullet in the correct location and you will be skinning. I believe they are loaded with Cast Performance bullets. _____________________________________________________ A 9mm may expand to a larger diameter, but a 45 ain't going to shrink Men occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing had happened. - Winston Churchill

Load them up and go shoot pigs. My own 315gr hard cast out of a lee mold kills them just fine they well too.

Thanks guys. What do you think the outer limits of this round are, penetration wise? I'm thinking more and more on settling for just 1 round, and getting away from all the 240 gr stuff I have. I suppose I could go shoot various items of various densities and try to recover a round myself. Like I said, i'm having a difficult time finding documentation on this rounds performance. I'm really looking forward to getting down into the swamps and putting a couple hogs down. Never taken one before, i'm pumped!!

I have used them as a finisher on a few pigs. They always penetrated through the head or shoulder. Also Randy Garrett tole me one time that if I was unable to get any of his hard cast bullets in time for a trip in big bear country that the Federal Castcore 300 gr was a good one to use instead. They also shoot very good out to 100 yards in my Winchester 44 Mag Trapper lever action. Which does not sound logical with its 1 in 38 micro groove rifling but they do, also so does the Speer 270gr Gold Dot Soft point... DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

If you are looking for an all-around load, this just may be it. It has no limitations, really, and will work on really big game as well. If it shoots accurately, you'll be in good shape as long as you do your part. Keep us posted! "Ignorance you can correct, you can't fix stupid." Thanks for your input. I've built a spear, a knife and doing the handgun thing as well, so I hope to have 1 bloodbath of a week next month. I hope my biggest concern is bringing enough coolers to transport meat..

Ditto N.E., my Trapper loves my 300grn Castcores over 20grns of H110. Tack driver, Ruger SBH 7 1/2" loves 'em also. The things you see when you don't have a gun. NRA Endowment Life Member Proud father of an active duty Submariner... Go NAVY!

Just for clarification the "Castcore" is a load offered by Federal featuring a 300 grain hard cast flat-nosed bullet produced by Cast Performance. "Ignorance you can correct, you can't fix stupid." I switched to strictly 300 gr bullets or heavier in my 44s before I sold my last one. And if I get another 44 it will live with 300s in it. I just find then a better all around load than lighter bullets. Same with the 45 Colt. 300 gr or a little heavier. With them running around 1200 fps. They work well and you don't need to remember which poi load is in the gun. If I was mainly using a 44 mag for ccw urban I would probably go with a 200 gr 1300 fps load. But I don't plan on that scenario. Phil Shoemaker : "I went to a .30-06 on a fine old Mauser action. That worked successfully for a few years until a wounded, vindictive brown bear taught me that precise bullet placement is not always possible in thick alders, at spitting distances and when time is measured in split seconds. Lucky to come out of that lesson alive, I decided to look for a more suitable rifle."
