Handgun Gurus:

Can you ream out a 45ACP revolver to 45Win Mag and get decent hunting performance?

Thanks,
QD

The 45 Win Mag operates at much higher chamber pressures than the 45 ACP, so that could be a problem in thin walled cylinders such as the S&W 625.

It's been done on Ruger Blackhawk cylinders that were originallly chambered for .45 ACP. If you're doing this in a revolver though, I'd recommend going with .45 Colts that are loaded in the 30,000 CUP range (assuming that you're using a strong revolver such as a Redhawk, Blackhawk, Freedom Arms, etc).

Dan Wesson currently offers model 460/7460 revolver that utilizes moon clips to allow .45 ACP, .45 Super, .460 Rowland, and .45 Mag, also .45 auto rim without moon clips.
I was happy to find this after I traded my LAR Grizzly, as I still have 2 .45s and like the ballistics of the .45 mag. Now to save up and get one.

Kev,
I really enjoyed the Grizzly, but I found that it needs a stronger spring to prevent slide/frame battering, could've just been my loads, but, Win factory loads felt the same (didn't have a chrony then). Due to slide speed in recoil, brass would flip back and hit the top of the slide (as evidenced by the flat side on the brass), and ejection went anywhere from straight back to almost straight right, up to 30-35 ft. As for fit and finish, it was a good gun, and accurate as most any good quality 1911. I had the .357 mag conversion as well, and that had less recoil than most 9 mm's I've shot, it's just finicky for OAL due to the mag design. I traded it to my step-dad awhile back, when I planned to sell it, since LAR no longer makes it or parts. I don't think he's fired it yet, but I did find a 30 lb spring for him (original was 27 lb), so that may help. I also installed a full-length guide rod, as I had to replace the first spring due to the battering as well as it kinked the spring a little. I'll probably load down for him a little as well, since he doesn't plan to hunt with it. The other thing I liked on mine, and I am hoping to do the same on my Springfield, is the barrel extending about 1 in. beyond the slide. Gets a little extra velocity, without much extra weight. Could even mag-na-port that, if you wanted to cut down muzzle flip.
Now that I am remembering it, he likes to trade a lot, I may just try to get it back. [Wink]
