Came accrossed a 10" BFR that was marked down to 699. Actually, have been looking at for over a yr but in that it is an extended frame SA, I thot it was a 45-70. This time, it had a reduced price ticket that caught my eye.

Initial observation was that it was very well made and had a very good trigger ~ BUT, I wonder about the huge amount of freebore incorporated in the chambers on these extended/long frame revolvers. Would like to hear from owners, thots as to accuracy etc. I understand its been discontinued in this caliber.
TIA

The BFR's are well made, accurate revolver that are well worth the money..... The longer cylender will not pose a problem

It will not be a problem at all, I have a BFR in 500 Mag and it uses the same long cylinder as the 45-70. I get great accuracy with the 500 Mag, and I can use long bullets without a problem. The 460 S&W is even longer than the 500 Mag, so you don't have a lot of freebore and at that price, I would buy it.

The BFR is a great gun, very accurate and well built. You won't be disappointed. Now go get it before someone else does...lol

I was impressed w/the tight quality ~ light was insufficient to chk out the bore. Not that the bore could be an issue but wondering if the BFR uses gain-twist rifling like the S&W XVR? Kinda wished I stayed home today ~ Like I need another 460 revolver

No the BFR does not use the gain twist, not really needed. Just as the Encore does not have the gain twist. Plus it is more fun shooting the 300 to 395 gr. hard cast bullets with the BFR. Also Ranger Rick make's a cool 575 gr. for the 460 Mag.

Now go get it..lol

Quick, run and buy it! It is a fallacy that the boolit needs to be right at the forcing cone with no jump. BFR's will teach you all about that! clap

Obviously, came to the wrong place to bolster any resistance to temptation.

After a 10-day wait, I'll bring it home. This makes the 5th HG in 2yrs. There went my savings, my wife (if she finds out), the tax rebate/economic stimilus, my dog, the respect of my children and remaining gunsafe space.

Nice part about it is that it came w/scope base but on the downside, a cardboard box much like the Freedom Arms. Now that its too late, how's the recoil w/o compensation/ports? Blast compared to the XVR?

One of the sales clerks said they lost $50 on it but had to move it as it's been there too long. I've walked by from it for a couple of yrs and almost made it this time ~ my feet were still moving towards the exit and the reduce price tag caught my eye ~ and it indicated a caliber other than what I had thot it was. Then, my feet stopped and came back where the rest of me that had remained imoble. I had genuinely tried not to buy it ~ thinking that sage wisdom of the board members here would give me the necessary grit to refuse. I was wrong ~ but it feels good until 'she who must be obeyed' finds out.

Now, to figure out how to get it into the house unnoticed? No, the gun lamp thingy is passe'.

Had a problem w/a HG scope and sent it back in for warranty service. They sent me a new replacement. Then they sent me new replacement. Now, the extra will have a home on the BFR.

If you want to get the gun in the house without the wife finding it, go shooting the day you pick up the new gun, then bring back the new gun with all the other guns...lol

As for the recoil without the compensator, don't worry about it. My BFR 500 Mag has the same felt recoil as my S&W 500 Mag. In my opinion the compensator does not reduce felt recoil, but aids in muzzle lift. I prefer the uncompensated guns over the compensated gun.

Yeh ~ right. She's not gun smart but as a CPA she can count. During our 40yrs together, have done it all.Worse scare when I declared to her, 'its not mine ~ its Fred's" and he took it home w/him. That worked but almost not got it back.

Irecently read somewhere that BFR grip frames were actually RSBH gripframes. Is so? If so, one can use aftermarket grip panels made for the SBH right? Really don't like the oem hard rubber grips

For serial numbers starting with the prefix "JT" only. I used the Houge rubber grips for a while on my BFR 500 Mag, I bought the Super Black Hawk grips and they worked on my BFR. I now have a set of Black Micarta Grips on my 500 Mag.

I have a order in for a set of super blackhawk grips made from buffalo horn for my BFR in 45-70. Hope they get here soon.

But I know what you mean about them ugly grips the come with the BFR. I had to get rid of mine. My BFR 45-70 right now has the Pau Ferro Wooden Grips.

Here are 2 sets Magnum Research sells.

You could always do what I am doing.

When I bought my .454, I told my wife "Well, you can get a handgun or new furniture!" Figuring the furniture.

Yesterday she decided she wants a Berreta 96 in .40 S&W with the extra .22 LR slide. Which means I have to go get some new dies, powder, brass, and bullets. That didn't quite work as planned!
