Russell Taylor asked me to post this for the readers here.......
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Can any of you recommend a GOOD dry lubricant for use on a pistol? It must be something that doesn't collect/retain dust/sand/grit. I would prefer something that doesn't need to be reapplied on a daily basis or whatever, but I understand reapplications may be required from time to time. Many of us over here have NO gun lubricant, wet or dry. I've considered paste wax, but I'm not sure how that would hold up and if the gun would function after prolonged shooting. I tried doing an Internet search for "dry gun lubricant" from where I am, but I didn't exactly get the results I was hoping for. (I don't think I'll elaborate.)
If anyone could recommend one or two products and provide, hopefully, a website for ordering, many of us would be MOST appreciative. (Oh, the folks with the mouse rifles are in the same boat.)
Also, a new request. I'm doing pretty good (thank you, all who have sent things -- you know who you are, and I do, too (MANY thanks) on hygiene products... but gun-cleaning supplies are at a real premium here, even worse than toilet paper. We need .223 brushes and 9mm brushes (and rods, too, for that matter). If you have old rods (multi-piece, preferably) that you don't use anymore, feel free to send them over and I'll give them out appropriately. Patches, PIPE CLEANERS (!!!), and all the usual gun-cleaning stuff for M16s and 9mms are an incredibly-rare commodity over here. We're not allowed to keep our weapons in bags (most of us were using Zip-Loc bags for our pistols, then jamming them into our holsters -- until people with more rank started bitching). So, our firearms are exposed daily to sand. (In sandstorms, things get REALLY bad where firearm maintenance is concerned.)
Again, I want to take a moment to thank all of you from the Accurate Reloading forums who have gone OUT OF YOUR WAY to help me out over here. Anything extra (i.e., duplicates) I've received have been shared with those in need, and EVERYTHING has been appreciated -- and I mean "EVERYTHING!"
I look forward to making up the hunts I've missed. They will all be paid for by the time I get home, except for my first brown-bear hunt in Alaska, which will be half paid for... but "half" is a start. I'm still targeting 2006 for my first Safari, regardless of what my stocks are doing. My goal is to save $10K in the next 2.5 years.
Things are going more or less as you would expect over here. From what I can tell, CNN has the war over already... but the Clinton News Network can go take a big flying... oh, nevermind, I'll try to keep it clean.
Again, thanks everyone for all you've done for me and mine over here. It has meant a lot, and continues to mean a lot.
Take care.
Semper Fi.
Russ
Ann,
Are you willing to accept stuff, put it in a box and mail it to Russ in one lump.
If so, PM me your address and I'll have Brownell's ship some rods, patches, and bore brushes to you. It'd be a start anyway.
Ann send Russ some of this...
E&L Gun and Reel Lube Dry Graphite
E&L Mfg., Inc
(541)874-2137
www.brasscatchers.com
I have used this lube for several years. You spray it on, let it dry for 5 min and you are good to go. I have used it on semi-auto, and full auto weapons, rifles handguns, and shotguns. Dirt, sand, powder residue, etc will not stick to it. You can not wipe it off once applied. Birchwood Casey Gunscruber will take it off, water will not.
Yes it is a pressurized spray can. [Frown]
You might try Bore Tech Tef-Dri. It is a dry lubrication containing Teflon. It goes on wet but dries to a smooth finish. Available from
www.sinclairintl.com
I seem to remember a similar problem, ie. no cleaning supplies, in Southeast Asia.
Ann,
We use graphite in the safe and vault industry and I know it's widely used in the locksmithing industry in a powder form. No aerosol cans, all you need is a squeeze type (rubber?) bottle to squirt it from. Like I mentioned, it's a dry powder, about the consistency of talc. I use it on my coyote rifle when the temps. here get way below zero...no worries about freezing. Also good for not attracting dust and dirt.
We have a bunch on hand here. Let me know if that's something he can use and I'll see about rounding up a dispenser.
Ann,
I have seen articles several times that mention mixing powder graphite and rubbing alcohol in a little squirt bottle. Spray the gun, the alcohol dries but leaves the graphite behind. If Russel could swipe some Rubbing alcohol from BAS and mix it with Ralph's graphite he would be all set, and the only things that need to be mailed is the graphite and a squirt bottle or two (like those sold for flower spritzing or at Wal-Mart for hair care). If he can get the alcohol I will get a couple of the spray bottles this weekend and send them out Monday.
Please feel free to E-mail me theedmunds@kingcon.com
Come on Guys ... Pony up some cleaning stuff. Make sure Russ and the guys have clean machines with which to hunt dangerous game [Big Grin] [Big Grin]
Just ordered a bunch of stuff from Brownell's to be shipped priority directly to Russ. 24 Bore brushes and 2000 patches in each 223 and 9mm, a dozen Dewey pistol rods with nylon tips, as well as 2880 pipe cleaners and a dozen parts brushes.
Still have not found a source of moly powder that is not proscribed from air shipment.
I picked up a few bags of assorted size patches, a .223 Bore Snake (I figued it would be good for the guys to do a quick clean of the barrel), and some gun lube called TW25 B made by Kleen Bore. I do not know how well it works but it has a bunch of Mil-Test numbers on the package and it specifically says: "Long Lasting, penetrates metal pores, doesn't burn off... Resists sand and dust... Effective under all climate conditions..."
They can try it if it works Russell can let us know. Then more can be sent. If it doesn't maybe someone else will send something that does fit their needs. Hopefully I will get it sent out Monday. Sean
THANKS GUYS!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Ann,

Major Russ Taylor told me you would post this if I sent it to you. Thanks.

I want to express my thanks to all who were involved in sending us the weapon cleaning equipment. As you can imagine, this environment is not weapon-friendly, and we fight a never ending battle against dust and grit. This organization went from 4000 soldiers in peacetime to a wartime strength of over 14,000. We experienced many unanticipated shortages. One of those was cleaning kits. Your generosity in providing two boxes of cleaning supplies is overwhelming. Major Taylor is busy distributing these supplies to, in his words, "Soldiers who take their weapons seriously". As we prepare to move in the next couple weeks to our permanent base camp in Iraq, we'd better all take weapons cleaning seriously! Again, thanks to all involved. Whenever this is over, look me up in Livermore, Iowa, and the beer is on me.

Hi, everybody. I'm currently deployed with Russ and LTC Larson, and they clued me in on this awesome site. I received from Russ some really cool cleaning stuff that your members pitched in to buy. Just wanted you guys to know how much we appreciate it.

Just a little about me. As you can see from my log-in name, my hunting weapon of choice is a little on the big side, however, now that I'm in a headquarters unit, they frowned on my bringing it along. (I mean, WHERE are you going to keep it?) I am currently varmint hunting with a CZ-52, which is like shooting a laser at everything up to and including Badger. (Which isn't quite legal in Iowa, but when they're trying to break into the house....

Again, thanks for all the guys who got together to buy us stuff.
