Has anyone used\can recommend quick detach mounts\rings? I have a S&W 500 I would like to put some kind of quick detach mounts on. Don't necessarily wish to carry with scope attached so I'd like to know thoughts of quick detach on a handgun of larger caliber.

You may want to look at Weaver base and rings.

hunteratheart,

I mounted a 2X Leupold scope in 4 Weigand rings on a Weigand base on my 8 3/8" 500 S&W. The scope is easily removed/reattached with an allen wrench.

Which 500 S&W do you have? The reason for asking is that the QD feature wouldn't make sense for my gun since tools would be required to remove the the scope base and reinstall the iron sights. I know that some 500 S&W's (such as the 10" guns) have a scope mounting rail machined into the barrel shroud and a QD system would make alot of sense in that case.

I have a S&W 44 Mag with an integral scope base. I mounted a 2X Leupold in Leupold QD rings and was completely satisfied. The scope can be easily installed/removed while leaving the iron sights sighted in.

Hope some of this helps, good luck!

Darrell

Darrell,
Thanks for the input. I have the 6.5" barrel. If I had to have a permanent base, it would be ok as long as I could still use the iron sights and just remove the rings/scope. I have QD rings on some of my rifles and they pretty much return to zero when I remove and reinstall. Wanting the same for this S&W.

OK...I'm unfamiliar with the mounting requirements of the gun that you have (the base) but I have had good luck with both Leupold and Warne QD rings. I actually prefer the Leupold model since you can mount the bottom of the ring on the base, install the scope, and then loosely install the top of the ring so as to get the crosshairs lined up straight. Being a vertical split ring, the Warne QD rings are a little "trickier" to get everything line up right but are a rock solid ring system in my experience.

Good luck with whatever you decide on!

I've used Warne with great results on my 375H&H rifle.

Let us know how QD rings work for you.

I use Warne QD rings on a bunch of barrels but have been chicken to try them on a 500 S&W. Mine has 4 rings and I think it needs them.

Just came across a Warne multi-sighting scope base for the 500. Once it gets here, I'll look at rings. Supposedly allows scope to be detached and still use irons. Thinking about the Warne Maxima QD rings and a Burris 2-7x32 plex handgun scope.

Company refunded money as they did not have the scope base in stock and no idea of availability> Still looking for the scope base.

Managed to get the Warne Multi Sighting base - already here along with the Burris 2-7X32 Multi Plex scope. Have a set of the Warne Maxima QD rings on the way - should be here this coming week. Hoping by next weekend to have it all together. The Warne multi sighting base is interesting. Allows existing rear sight to be mounted on it and the 1 piece base includes a front ramp sight so it can be used without a scope. Hoping this setup works well. Will post pics once I have verything in place.

Just mounted it up last night. Warne Maxima QD rings on a Warne multi sighting base and a Burris MultiPlex 2-7 scope. 10 rounds through it last night at the range and all was still tight. Great shooting setup.

not taken the scope off yet to adjust irons.
I did put 10 rounds downrange with the scope. Bench rest, 100 yards, off 4X4 block of wood and towel, I was holding 3" 3 shot groups which is amazing for me! This is actually my first handgun I've outfitted with a scope.

Good shooting, congratulations! My .500 shoots good too and is definitely more accurate than I am.
