I bought this gun last weekend at a gun show in Dallas. It is a Freedom Arms, .44 Mag, no top strap sights (meaning it never had open sights or the cuts for them), with a scope mount installed there. Has a B & L Elite 3000 2x6 on it (I think this is original to the gun, but obviously don't have any way of knowing). Barrel is about 8 inches (its out in the truck where I'm taking it hunting this morning so this is a guess) and has a 1 plus inch long, larger than barrel diam muzzle brake mounted on it. Besides FA 44 mag marking on one side, it has Corbon Custom on the other and then Magnaport on the side of the action. I shot it twice yesterday ( I was in a rush to go hunting) and amazingly it was sighted in at 50 yards. Two bullets were nearly touching at 25 so I went hunting without further ado. Killed a spike with it about 20 minutes after I got into the tent blind, so it must be lucky. Easy shot though, about 25 yards, just the way I like them.

My thoughts are this was a custom made for Corbon by Magnaport but I was hoping one of y'all might have seen or read about it. Purely guessing, I'd say the gun is about 15 years old.

I tried to take the muzzle brake off, but it is either on there REALLY HARD or is silver soldered on. I'm trying to figure out which. Brake works, but I don't find them necessary on .44s and it is (surprise) damn loud. I put on ear muffs in the blind before shooting the spike. If Mr. Big appears, I'll just shoot first and ring later.

Gotta go chase Mr. Big who was spotted yesterday attempting lascivious behavior with one of my does.

Any info would be appreciated.

Contact FA in Freedom, Wy, and give them the serial number. That will at least get you pointed in the right direction...

Sounds like a Cool gun. How much did you have to pay?

I still want/need/desire/drool thinking about a FA in 454.

gato,

I have one similar to yours except mine is magnaported. It is in .454 and has a ten inch barrel. There have never been sights on the gun and it came with a 4X Leupold. Mine is only stamped Freedom Arms.

Swede16:

I got what I consider a good bargain, but the gun had been carried and beaten up a bit cosmetically. Since I beat the crap out of just about everything I hunt with, mostly rattling around in my truck between hunts, that was not a problem to me. I got the gun for just over a grand, including tax. While I haven't shot it very much, I shot a few more 25 yard groups today fooling around and it is a real shooter, which is to be expected with FAs. In this area, if you're patient, you can expect to find a FG .454 for $800 to $900.

M16:

They are superb revolvers. I enjoy the close tolerances just looking at them. I own a .454 FG but since it has only open sights on it, haven't really shot it that much. I also, while having nothing against the .454 and really not having a problem with its recoil, just think its too much cartridge for what I'm shooting around here. I shot some .45 Colts in it, but had to send off for a higher front sight. About the time I got it, my eyes decided that I was older than I wanted to be. I need a good scope mount for it but haven't really looked into it.

I am going to call FA about this revolver, but was hoping someone knew about it. Most of these custom types are written up in some gun mag somewhere along the way.

Gato,

Here is a picture of my Freedom Arms collection.

The short barreled one is a .44 Mag with all the trimmings. It has every option available from Freedom Arms. The rest are all .454s and one has the optional .45 Colt cylinder.

I agree that the .454 is more than needed for most Texas hunting. Although I do like it for hunting trophy bucks down in South Texas. I have used the Leupold scope mounts on mine and so far have had no problems.

There just isn't a finer revolver made. Good luck with your's and I hope you can find out more info from the factory.

Well rats, M16, you've got me beat by two. I'll have to hurry to catch up. Wink Mine are (in order of purchase) the FG .454, a 97 .357 with adj sights, and the above .44 mag.

Well, I now know about all I'm going to know about this revolver. I called Freedom Arms, Magnaport, and Corbon, in that order. Everyone was very helpful but not too full of information. Gun was made in 1991. Magnaport did trigger work, cylinder etching, installed a magnabrake for Corbon. The owners of the companies are close friends. It is possible that Corbon's owners used it themselves or that they sold it. They seem to think the work was done about 10 years ago, but it could have been longer.

I did find out that the brake does come off, but I'll probably have to heat it to remove it.

Hello M16,
How do you like the 4 3/4 barrel compared to the 6 inch.

I like the 4 3/4 for packing but I shoot the six incher better. So for general bumming around the 4 3/4 and for serious hunting I prefer the six inch.
