Hey All,
Just wondering what you think of my brain child?
 -

I have built three of these now and they are great. This one has a 5" tube, the others had 4.25". It weighs only 2 ounces more than a S&W mountain gun! The 4.25" weighs the same! I don't think anyone else does this. I have machined off all the fat, from the front sight to the grip frame to the scope mounts. I have also added a full moon clip conversion to allow shooting of .454, .45 colt, 45 ACP, And 45 winmag! You must use jacketed bullets with .45 colt, 45 acp, and 45 win mag. You have to use a moon clip with the acp and win mag. It's really great to shoot with .45 acp, cheap practice and almost no recoil. It's a little stiff recoiling in 454 but no worse than a 7.5 in stock ruger due to very effective porting. I developed it as a carry gun while fishing, packing meat, or backup hunter in Alaska. It also suprisingly shoots the 45 acp and 454 to same point of aim.
I would appreciate any comments/suggestions.
I could also do it to a .480 but it wouldn't be as versitile. I'm not really trying to sell them here but if you're interested make a post and I'll tell you where to get one.

Thanks,
Aaron

Very nice. Built like a tank and as light as a Mountain Gun. Sounds like a winner to me. I like the round butt grip. How much louder is it with the porting than without? That my biggest complaint with my Taurus is the factory port. I'd like to bore it out and sleeve it to quite it down abit. Do you have a sight with more pics?

I don't think it's much louder with the ports, These short barrel 454s are rediculously loud with or without. I forgot to mention it also has a fulll action job. We will also be cutting down a .500S&W as soon as we can get one too.

greg p,

I'm not from Wildwestgun but on their website you can find the selling price

$1395 conversion + gun
$799 on your Ruger SRH

I think this gun is great and very well tuned. As I'm not a big fan of Ruger SRH, I can't comment more. IMHO if the grip will be changed by a Hogue or Pachmayr that will be a perfect gun.

Did you make a 3" snub version with a bobbed hammer of your Wolverine or was that a modified photo that was posted on another sight? If so, are you using a faster burning powder for the 3" model?

Thaks guys, we did not make the 3" but have tossed around the idea, where was the site?
This would cut the barrel about even with the frame.
I don't Know about the bobbed hammer idea though, It's really tough to give the ruger a really good double action pull and still have a reliable primer strike, so I like having the option of a well placed single action first shot. These guns seem to be very accurate fired s/a and velocities seem to be still quite good with the 4.25" barrel.

By the way we can replace the grips as there are aftermarket ones available. I have small hands and the stock ones fit me better.

Great looking piece, think that's what I'm looking for. Did you make it a 5 shot cylinder? Offer other calibers? I have been told that the material that the new supers are made of is extremely difficult to work with. Any comments? E-mail me if your interested in building another.

Mark, We did not replace the cylinder, just modified it to accept the full moon clips. I could also do a .480 and I suppose a .44 if soneone wanted it. And yes, the ruger steel is a big pain to machine, It leaves alot of hand finishing.

Aaron,
Thanks for the reply. I checked my e-mail and didn't see where to get in touch. Is it at WWG? Cannot wait to get my hands on one. Thanks again.

Aaron & M.R.CLEAN,

The photo of the 3" I posted on the old board at sixgunner was digitally altered. Here it is...

COOL!!! Cannon, now I don't have to build one to know what in would look like. Although I will if anyone would like it. I Don't know if I'd want to shoot that little guy though, wouldn't be the easiest thing to control.

Yes, that was the photo I viewed on the "old" Sixgunner forum board. When I had my SRH 454 converted no one I called was offering the 3" conversion, only the 3.5" barrel conversion.

One last question Aaron. Why couldn't the barrel be cut off at, say, 4 inches and then the sight replaced? That should not cost $799 should it?

BD, No it wouldn't but then you'd just have a 4" super redhawk with half the words on the barrel. There's alot more involved here. 'Guess ya get what ya pay for.

You can get just the barrel cut down and sight re-attached for much less then that, one big bore pistol smith quoted me $100 to cut down the barrel, remove Ruger stamping on barrel, bead blast barrel and cylinder for two tone look, then re-attach barrel and front sight for $100. But, when you factor in overnight shipping both ways out of state you add ~$50.

The 454 and 480 SRH have the barrel glued in. The frame either has to be heated to break down the adhesive, risking ruining the heat treat in the metal if frame is over heated. The other option is to make up a ficture to allow the barrel to be re-worked w/o removing from the frame, which requires a good deal of investment on the part of the shop. The smith who gave me the quote uses the first method, I've been told WWG uses the latter method.

My shooting buddy Dennis is having his 454 bobbed down at WWG, can't wait to shoot it [Big Grin]

Paul you are correct in all respects. The barrels are glued in and we do do it without removing them. The first one I tried to take the barrel out of and no amount of heat would break it loose. I think it galled the stainless as the ruger steel is very sticky and prone to galling. I am very skeptical about heating the frame on one of these big boomers because I value my digits.. Our prices for cutting and crowning the barrel are $90 + 60 (two screws) to reinstall the sight. Removing the words would have to be quoted at the shop.

They put red loctite in the barrel thread for the SRH 454 and crush fit it to a point where the two surfaces fused together. To remove the SRH barrel, heat it up to around 500 degree and slap it a little and then remove it slowly. It should not be annealling the material at this temperature. Good luck.
