9.3x62 I have found that when using a 44 Mag revolver for big game hunting, the most effective range for this round is 0 to 75 yards. Before everyone goes crazy, I know full well and have used the 44 Mag with perfect results out to 125 yards on big game. Still the problem comes down to the ability to put the bullet where needed. I have also found that for a revolver, I have to go against the popular opinion and say that the 2x is a better choice, again let me explain my opinion on the matter. First off, with regular practice, one can become pretty effective shooting a 2x off hand out to 50 yards or so. From a sitting position, 75 yards is pretty easy to make a quality shot on. This is not the case with the 4x optics, generally, you will need a rest for all shooting with a 4x scope. Another advantage of the 2x is that it will be much brighter allowing you to use it later when the light starts to fade. Anyone who has hunted with handgun scopes know that they do not offer the light gathering properties that their rifle designed brothers do. Still the 2x will offer an advantage over the 4x in this area as well as offer a much larger field of view. The 4x may offer a little better detail when shooting into brush but only if the light conditions are pretty bright. For the effective range of the 44 I have never felt under scoped when hunting big game out to 100 yards. Past that I would say you should really have a different handgun, at least much past that. Just my opinion, for the effective range of the 44 Mag revolver, the 2x will serve better then the 4x in my experience. THe best revolver scope I have yet to try has been the Burris 1.5x-4. THis allows offhand shooting and still the ability to crank things up to 4x if you have a solid rest and enough light to use it for shots on the far side of 100 yards. Good Shooting!!! 50

Fiftydriver, very good post. I would have to agree with you. The reason I put the 4X was for the magnification.

I agree with fiftydriver. I have a 4X on my .22 Ruger for squirrels and it is impossible to hold steady without a rest. I have used 2X scopes and I now use the red dots for hunting. No magnification is needed for deer out past 100 yds. The red dot is fast and you don't have to have your eye in perfect alignment with the scope. I shot silhouette once with the 4X and could not hit a thing offhand. I can take down many targets with the red dot. Deer are easy with it. If you must have a scope, get the 2X or the variable. I would say you would be using 1-1/2X all the time.
