Hi All

I have been looking at alternatives to the 300XTP.

How would they compare to the 265gn rifle offerings in Hornady? (eg. .430 44 CAL 265 GR FP and 265 tipped bullet?) )Could these be used in a 44cal revolver and would they expand less than the XTP?

Thanks
Matt

Matt,

Try the 300gr Nosler HP bullets. They are better penetrators than the XTP's and yet still expand well. We used them on Russian boars of 300-350lbs and the bullets went right on thru both shoulders with 1-1/2" holes on the off side, shot from a Colt Anaconda 44mag revolver with an 8" bbl., and a tougher bullet yet is the 270gr Speer GoldDot soft point which are about the best penetrators but it takes a lot to get them to expand much.

Matt -- if you seek no expansion yet desire a jacketed bullet, Barnes just came out with their "Buster" flat-nosed bullets that are not meant to expand at all -- no lead tip. They make a 300 grain .429-inch bullet. I have ordered some and will be testing them soon.

We have them available here already and I have a couple hundred on the way for some testing. Why can't you get them, Matt?

Matt

If you want no expansion why don't you just get some 300gr cast bullets???

Can you not get them in the "Land Down Under"???

You can drive them faster than jacketed bullets and your barrels will last forever.

PS Lynns Hunting videos were very good.

For the ultimate in a solid bullet that won't deform look at the "punch" bullet from Belt Mountain bullet company. Thats about as good as it gets.

I wondered if maybe he could get a bullet mould quicker than actual bullets down there.

Maybe less import restrictions on moulds?

I love Punch bullets, but they wouldn't be economical for client hunters. They just cost too much IMHO. If they keep the speeds reasonable, there's no reason why they can't successfully use hardcast bullets.

Hi guys - thanks for the replies.

No you cant buy good n300gn cast projectiles here it seems.

My comments about the Barnes was only that for the first while all of the production gets snapped up by the US market and 1-2 years later it starts trickling through to Australia.

Most companies wont ship from the USA direct to Australia, projectiles anyway and you need import certificate for here too which is a pain.

I did buy a 300grn mould but I am not an experienced moulder - so I will have to give it to someone to make me some projectiles!!

I would like to follow up on the Barnes too... maybe I could bring some back from the USA when Im there in January or get some clients to bring some next year. Weight is always a problem though.

Anyhow - thanks again for the advice.. those Barnes sound good..
