I read an article about John Linebaugh. In this article that was written in 2006 he is talking about, How big is to big, and how he subscribes to the Taylor's Knock Out formula.
Does he still use this formula, Caliber times Bullet Weight times Velocity divided by 7,000 equals "Knock Out."

If you're going to make a hole, make it a big one.

45-120 with 405 grain bullets is a 67.
45-120 with a 720 grain bullet is 82.8! Big Grin

Love shooting precision and long range. Big bores too!

Recent college grad, started a company called MK Machining where I'm developing a bullpup rifle chassis system.

What charge are you using in the 45-120?

Where are all the Linebaugh experts?
I have not been to any of his seminars, so I don't know if Mr. Linebaugh still uses the TKO formula. I am very curious.

I keep reading about penetration, which I know a bullet has to get to the vitals to be effective.
I thought for sure I would have a answer on this already.

Why don't you just contact him yourself? That way, no one is speaking for John but himself. Given the wording of your last post, sounds like a bait job to start another "discussion" and I believe you got the proper response.

If ignorance is bliss; there are some blissful sonofaguns around here. We know who you are, so no reason to point yourselves out.

How in the hell is this a bait job. I have not gone to any Linebaugh seminars, I thought there were people that know if he still used the TKO for rating power.
I will call him.

My question has always been why 7000? Why not 4869 or 8011?

That was just the number he used to make his formula work.

There is no real science to it at all, as it seem from the resent reading I have seen.

It desn't take a genius to figure it out. when you find momentum using grains times velocity it give you grains feet momentum. To get that in pounds you devide that by 7000 the number of grains in a pound.
Or you divide the bullet weight by 7000 and then multiple that by velocity to get pounds feet momentum.
You know really it is amazing. Absolutely amazing.

OH my, a good read. Funny how it dovetails exactly what I and the other experienced hunters have posted all along!
Me_plat, get off your butt and read and understand the pressure-velocity thing he wrote about. He tells you exactly the same thing I have been telling you all along. Higher pressure does NOT mean more velocity.
Stop bothering me with your stupid PM's and read the truth by someone other then me.

I think Taylor's formula is more useful than muzzle energy as it takes into account bullet weight and diameter. Definitive? No, but then again, what is?
