Since I've heard the truth on the Ruger P Series pistols (crap!), I've been looking into other firearms. I've come across the Springfield XD Tactical in 9mm. I want to make a sound investment on the pistol I purchase, so I wonder if I have just become interested in more crap. Anyone out there with any experience with this pistol? I like the look of it, but what is it really like to shoot? I can talk long guns all day, but handguns are a new thing. Any advice would be appreciated. Arctic Gun

Been thinking about one myself. I shot a few rounds out of a new 4" XD in .45 ACP yesterday at an IDPA event and it was really nice. The owner said it was a little rough when he got it, but had his smith friend work it over and it is really smooth now. Balance and trigger is really good...almost as good as a GLOCK 19. The American Rifleman article is very favorable. Personally, in .45 I'm sticking with the 1911s for the additional weight. I want to shoot a S&W M&P before I make up my mind about the XD. For a 9x19 or a .40 S&W it is hard to beat the Sigs and GLOCKS. The year of the .30-06!! 100 years of mostly flawless performance on demand.....Celebrate...buy a new one!!

I just sold a 4" xd. I sold it because of the 9mm chambering not the gun. In my opinion it is one of the best designs out there. I am planning to buy another in .45acp. Walk softly and carry a big bore!

I have an XD-45 Service. Best tupperware gun out there. Period. Great ergonomics, great trigger and accurate. What I really liked is, the XD doesn't need anything added out of the box. You can get trigger jobs and other stuff if you want, but it is a great gun as is. Buy it! ZM

So the XD is okay then, well right on. Definatly gonna get one. Do the Springfield 1911s come in left handed versions? Arctic Gun

Not to my knowledge. But it not a big deal to get an ambi safety and lighten the mag release spring to accomodate a lefty. I think? that some of Springfield's 1911's come with ambi-safeties. The only manufacturer that I know of that ever made a lefty 1911, that being left side ejection, left side slide stop, etc. was Randall in the 1970's. If you want one of those, you need to have all your pockets filled with big wads of cash assuming you can even locate one. ZM

Dont get it in 9mm, it would be a waste. 40 cal ammo is just about the same price as 9mm now so it doesnt make much sense. If you are using it for hunting, you may want to get it in 5''. "There are creatures here that cannot even be found in books, and I have killed them all......"

I've got a 4" in .45 and a 5" 9mm. I added Dawson adjustable sights to the 9 and consider it a fun sport gun. I feed it cheap ammo and it has yet to hiccup. Never considered hunting with a 9mm as I have so many better choices both lighter and heavier for taking game. The beauty of the second amendment is that it will not be needed until they try to take it. -- Thomas Jefferson http://tcbunch.com

Why the 45ACP over the 9mm? Arctic Gun

My son has the XD40 Tactical and loves it. He had a Beretta 92FS in 9mm but thought it was kind of underpowered for anything but target shooting, and sold it and got the Springfield. Dennis Life member NRA

Not to start a fight...JMO, but within reason, it is where you shoot em, not what you shoot em with that counts. A good bullet in the .40 S&W is certainly the best compromise round and the .45 ACP is even better, but if you can't handle the gun and put rounds where they belong, you're better off with a Gold Dot in 9mm you can shoot well every time....not many people can do that everytime with the .45....especially if you don't shoot it a lot. I'd say simply because it is available in .45 ACP! I think the only reason I would buy a 9mm is if I wanted a pocket gun. Other than that I wouldn't consider a 9 in the XD. I'd be hard pressed to decide between the 45 ACP and the 40 unless I wanted the 3" model which is only available in 9mm or .40. Of course that's just my opinion.

I have a Sig P226 9mm and have never had a problem with it feeding/jamming it will shoot any thing I feed it including cast bullets. I have an H&G bullet mold that makes bullets that look like the H&G #68 BB. A friend has a Beretta it is finicky. I am not trying to trash Beretta’s so don’t take me wrong. Best of luck on your search for a 9mm semi auto have you looked at the Glock’s? Swede --------------------------------------------------------- NRA Life Member

I want an XD45 so I did a lot of research on them and found very little complait about them. They seem like the 1911, everyone just loves them. My problem was that when I wanted to buy one here in Canada the prices were like a full $300 more than prices in the US. I don't like getting ripped so that's my only reason for not owning one. --------------------------------- It's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it

bummer....I hate to hear bad things about the Rugers. My P90 works like a champ...and going on 7 years of shooting and NO problems...

There is nothing wrong with the Ruger P series other than looks. The XD is a great pistol, My Tac .40 has been reliable and accurate so far over 2000 rounds without a problem.
