I picked this toy up for $150 with holster and two extra sets of grips. It's in pretty good shape...much better than the price would indicate. With my concentration being T/C's, this thing is pretty ne to me.
Are there any tips out there from more experienced revolver shooters regarding accuracy hints or what to look for when doing load development concerning pressure signs. The trigger is pretty good so I'm not going to play with tricking it out but I do have a question...does anyone use the Belt Mountain base pins? Do they help?
I'm going to shoot mostly 215gr cast and 210gr jacketed bullets for backup purposes to my Contenders or for plinking targets. Thanks.

However, since I'm here editing this anyway...it occurs to me you might be wise to start and stop at my suggested load for your pistol since it's a used gun and I assume you have no idea about its history. At any rate, the load I gave you below is a super plinking/varmint load. Try it. You'll like it.

Dan, I've got a Smith .41 Mag Classic Hunter and totally love it. 18grs of 2400 and a 215gr cast bullet and it is a delight to shoot but still has PLENTY of power. 75 yd shots at rabbit sized game with this load is hardly even challenging. This load is so effective and plesant that I seldom bother to even shoot anything else in it. Why mess with perfection?

I have pretty much the same pistol, Dan. Mine has the 6.5" barrel. Pecos is right on the money with his loads. The only thing I've done to this Ruger is a trigger job, other then that, it just keeps on shooting well, better then me. - Dan

have tow of these, one is still in it's box never been shot. The other is a full custom job from Gary Reeder. I have been shooting the.41RemMag ever since I had to switch to handgun in 1989. Any one who has seem any of my posts with regard to the .41 knows how I feel about the .41. I have an extensive data base of .41RemMag load information from wax bullet loads that I shoot in my TV room to heavy hunting loads that will shoot through an 1800lb sized animal. Be more than willing to share if you like. You now have IMHO the most pleasant shooting of all the pistol calibers. It will ablsolutely do anything you will ask of it. It will do it efficiently, effectively, with less bark in the ear and bite to the hand. I guess my signature about says it all...

I have three 41s and love each one of them. I have a Classic Hunter as does Pecos as well as a RBH and a 8 3/8" Model 57 that has been done over quite nicely by Jack Weigand. For some reason I never much shot cast bullets in any of mine. With 20.2 grains of H110 and a Win mag pistol primer all three of my 41s shoot extremely well at 50 yards.(Like all bullets touching) I have tried Rem 210 JSP, Hornady 210 XTP and Sierra 210 JHC with the same results. I hunt with all of them.
BTW, I never full length resize the brass. I sort of neck size it like I do rifle cartridges. I just size enough to hold the length of the bullet. This serves to hold the case consistantly in the chamber without slop or movement so the bullet hits the forcing cone the same was every shot. I don't know how much difference it makes for sure, but mine shoot well enough for me to keep doing it.

To all who asked for my load data. This is my last night on shift. I start my 7 days off in the morning. Give me Friday to get my body clock back to days and I'll get the stuff together. For larrys; I have found that the .41RemMag is one of those "magic" rounds that you really have to try to screw up to get to shoot badly. Over the years I have used bullets from 170g jacketed to 280g hard cast(I'm working loads for the big boys now) and they all have shown that many times they are much better than I am. One always hears about a round(enter your choice)that does things( quick kills, shoots close, low recoil, etc) all out of porportion of the paper numbers or even the chrnoy numbers. IMHO the .41 in a pistol is that kind of caliber and the .41RemMag is that "poster child". I have posted many times on this fourm and others that I have found that I have a .41Remmag BullBerry 14 Contender that shoots so tight that it is scary. I don't usually post group sizes because I'm sure of the "fire from the sky" from all the nabobs who just know that I'm fibbing. According to these same nabobs I did all the wrong things when I first got into handgun hunting in 1989. I truly didn't know squat about the subject so I picked the "wrong" gun (S/W657) in the "wrong" caliber. Haven't looked back since. Nice to see a bunch of shooters who are just as "wrong" as I am.

Yeah it is one of the best rounds out there. For reduced loads try 6.7 gr. Bullseye, CCI 300 primers with the 215 gr cast bullets. What a plinking round. Just pennies to shoot all day. Slim
To all who aske I'm doing the data post as we speak. It is just bigger then I thought. Think to big to post here and might be to big to send as one email (depends on how big of a file your "pop" server will let through. think I'll break it down into three sections. the first section will be just the data, second section will be how I got there and the third section will be recounts of hunts and how the loads I have used performed on whitetail deer, pigs both small and big (300+lbs) and the feral cattle that have been killed with the round. That way you can just delet all the email after the first one if you don't want the "sea stories". Look for an email from me (mbellangersr@nc.rr.com) with an attachment called "Me and My .41s part X Should be ready in a few days.

For SlimL We think alike. I have a "let the kids and ladies shoot" round that is just like yours, 6.5 Bullseye with a 215 cast from Alstar. It is a reall pussy cat to shoot. Just the ticket for a new shooter to cut their teeth on. BTY I also use that bullet with 8g of Bullseye as another carry round in the summer.

I'd appreciate being added to the 41 Mag loading list recipients list. I have two. Have taken deer with them.
Am heading to Wyoming in mid September for an Elk hunt. We are back packing ... which usually means that the rifles are lashed to the back of the packs on the way in. Will carry the 6" 41 Mag as the last line of defense for the local bear. Will be loaded with 220 grain hard cast Keith's going max velocity.
As the pistol is going up the hill with me anyway, I looked for my shot load data and (after 15 years of not using that particular recipe) can't find it. As I remember , it used #11 shot between two gas checks. Found the shot and the gas checks, but no recipe.
Anyone have a recipe for 41 Mag shot shells? Would be good for snakes and small game for the pot.
Still, what would you say is the effective range of your Contender .41 on deer sized game. You seem to be very experienced in this caliber. I am in the market for a new TC barrel, maybe even a 41GNR. Thanks
