I have been out of the country (the States) for a year and recently shot both my SRH in .480 and in .454 Casull, for the first time in a long time. I used to shoot both so frequently that I didn't notice just how unpleasant the Casull is with the factory grips shooting full-tilt loads (Corbon 320 grain loads in particular). It never occured to me that it was as bad as it is when I shot it every other week. Shooting 410 gr Buffalo Bore loads in the .480 is pleasant compared to even 300 gr factory ammo in the .454. Any grip suggestions?

Yes.... This is the Hogue Monogrip with the sorbathane blue insert. This is what comes on the SRH Alaskan.

Have you used this grip, Mike? How does it feel? It has got to be better than the factory grips that are on it.

I use the Hogue on my 454SRH and Its like shooting a colt 45 with heavy loads. made a big difference.

I haven't used the new hogue grips, but did try the oringinal ones. They place your hand lower on the frame, and hence muzzle whip is noteably increased.

I've also found that my 480 has much more recoil than it did when I was shooting it once or twice a week, and then didn't shoot it for about a year.

Lemme know how you like the hogues, as I'll likely get a pair myself.

Paul, I noticed that the .480 with 410 gr Buffalo Bore loads (1200 fps) torqued in my hand noticeably, but the Casull is just plain unpleasant. It just about slaps your hand whereas the .480 pushes and torques more. I will give the grips a try -- at that cost there is absolutely nothing to lose.

Your observation is one of the reasons I have a 480 and not a 454. I'd shot a few 454's and 480's in the SRH before getting my 480, aswell as a 500 Linebaugh SRH, and thus I chose the 480, as it didn't beat me up.

How much difference is there in the grip frames between the SRH and the standard RH? I own three RHs, but never have cared for the "snout" on the SRH frame, so haven't bought one...

FWIW, I really like the Pachmayr Presentation grips on my RHs. Have put the Hogue monogrips on them, and they just don't feel the same as on a Smith...

The grips are very different between the RH and SRH. I find the RH to really wack the web of the hand, but not so on the SRH.
