Expecting delivery on a used Ruger Super Redhawk in 454 Casull in a week or so.

no factory rings included, so I have to start somewhere for optics.

I am thinking about a weaver rail adapter, and an Ultra Dot LT Reflex type sight.
Anybody have any advice or experience with the reflex sights on these big kickers?

One thing I don't like is that you take off the rear site to mount the weaver rail, but that is not a show stopper.

This is a fun gun, no serious big game aspirations, but I might smack a whitetail doe if I get the chance.

I did a search and found the UltraDot is popular, but I didn't see anybody using the reflex site, is there a functional reason?

thanks
LT

I wouldn't believe it would be terribly difficult to get the proper rings for your revolver.

the stock ruger rings are great. you should have them included if it's new, if not you can order them from midway or other internet gun sights quickly and easily. get an ultradot if ya want the red dot sight and if ya want a scope cut throught all the bs and get a leupold variable right of the start.

oh yeah, with the ruger rings ya don't have to remove the sights at all. it's great. i load quick fast deer loads like hornady 240's and sight em in for the scope and then use heavier bullets sighted in with the iron sights for bigger stuff.

Here's my .500 Linebaugh SRH using the factory rings and mounting points with an Ultradot 30. It's a good setup that handles recoil very well.

Whitworth:

Nice looking hand cannon....

I bet I go with something just like that for optics. What MOA dot works best for you?

I've put a 4" 30mm UltraDot on my SRH .480 Ruger for my trip coming up in two weeks. With a poor rest off the back of my vehicle, I was able to get about a 3" group for 5 shots @ 50 yds.

I put on a Weigland rail and used Warne rings, which as you mentioned, required removal of the rear sight. With my fading eyesight and the added benefit of the RedDot sight, I think it's a worthy compromise. I am going to put the factory sight in the gun case, just in case it might be needed though I am taking a spare UltraDot.

I would like to here about the barrel work too...like the fluting.

I have read that the barrels are tough to remove from the frame. Is that true? Who did the work on yours Whitworth?

I got my used SRH, and really like it.

The first thing I wondered....what would it look like "slab sided" (besides getting rid of the silly Ruger lawyer proofing) Anybody ever seen one slab sided?

The problem with the multi-dot sights is that they won't fit between the factory rings on the SRH. The 4 moa Ultradot will and you then won't have to remove your rear sight. I don't have to address how that is advantageous. I have shot groups under an inch at 50 yards with a 4 moa Ultradot, and they are fantastic in low-light hunting conditions. Just have to practice.

The .500 Linebaugh SRH was built by Jack Huntington (530/268-6877) and it was built on a .454 SRH. Yes the .480 and .454 iterations of the SRH have a barrel that is difficult to remove, but Jack does it frequently. Ruger used a glue on the threads that works a little to well! He did the barrel fluting as well and it's a 5-inch barrel. I was planning on using it for backup duty, but it proved so accurate it became a primary hunting gun for me. I sold it earlier this year, but I killed a cow moose and a black bear with it and it was one effective machine!
