I am new to revolvers as I purchased my first one a few months ago. I have shot about 40-60 factory rounds through it and less than 20 reloads so far. While I have cleaned the cylinder and barrel, I am interested in knowing how often and which parts need oil or lubrication and further internal cleaning. Anyone have time to give a few tips on what to lubricate, and how to best to go about it. Thanks!

One of the things many people are not taught is how to remove the cylinder for proper cleaning...what kind of revolver do you have? S&W, Colt, Dan Wesson, Taurus, Ruger...? Single Action or Double Action...All are different. Two spots that need lube that are often neglected are both ends of the cylinder assembly. On the ejector rod end of the S&W a drop of lube should be used as well as on the star and where the center rod enters the frame. Side plates should be removed and the internal parts cleaned and lubed depending on how often the gun is shot and what it is subjected to.... Bob

Carefully remove the front screw from the sideplate...and don't loose it. Open the cylinder and the crane and cylinder will slide out. You can then thoroughly clean both the cylinder and crane. After cleaning the cylinder hold it upside down, push in the ejector rod and then get the plastic wand of some spray cleaner in there to clean out the internals. Shake out all the excess. Put several drops of lube on the part of the crane that goes back inside the cylinder and spin it... Pull the crane back out and wipe it off... Do this a few times to get any dirty oil out and lube the internals. On the last pass just put one drop of lube on the front and rear bearing points. One drop of lube on the ejector rod where it enters the crane and then a little lube on the ejector rod tip and on the star and tip that enters the frame. Also clean the area under the star well as this can cause binding if there is too much buildup... On the end of the crane that goes into the frame, put just one drop on that area and wipe it around.. Slide the assemply back into the frame and slowly close..now put the screw back in and turn it down firmly...and make sure the other two screws are also tight. USE A PROPER FITTING SCREWDRIVER.... For the internals one can just cock the hammer and put 1-2 drops of lube into the action. Cycle the action several times DA. I would suggest that if you want to further clean and lube the action get someone locally to show you the proper method of sideplate removal... There isn't much to it but if you don't know what you are doing one can screw things up quick... Bob
