A chronograph is a useful tool for load development but certainly not necessary. On occasions, even loads with rather high SD can be extremely accurate and simply defy mathematical logic.

And, like others have mentioned, I don't need a chrony to tell me that 320 grain Cast Performance bullets from my .44 Magnum will shoot through and kill just about anything I want to hunt.

As to the copy-and-paste posting of wikipedi crap: that site is an ongoing JOKE in the world of higher academia. It may be OK for a 300-word paper for a 5th grader, but it is so filled with errors and inconsistencies that it is absolutely frowned upon by those in the know.

Most college professors will not accept anything citing wiki. And a number of students have failed due to their trust in -- and in some cases, their copying of -- the "source."

I am actually glad that there wasn't an internet for research when I was in college!! To much false garbage to pick through...... We had to do it the old fashion way -- with books! Big Grin

Chronographs are useful, no doubt, but I have survived for a long time without one......and life goes on........

I know what you are saying there. I have been killing game with bullets that I could not tell you the exact velocity, but they are still dead. Big Grin

There is some information that is useful, but like you said, a lot of crap in filtered in it also.

Hello to all. My name is Chad and I am the one in the video's shooting 300 yards with my 500 Linebaugh.

yucon delta - Thanks for the complement I'm not one of the Shootists but just to be thought of like that is awesome.

Witworth - The load is 24gr of 2400, starline brass, CCI-350 primer, and the bullet I cast of 50/50 WW & Lino in a custom LBT mold. It's a 440gr LFN-GC with a .5" nose wich puts about .10" of the bullet bearing surface foward of the case mouth. I use LBT blue soft lube.

I did the videos because of some people calling B.S. on me when I would tell them of long range revolver shooting

Chad, what was the size of the target you were shooting at? To be quite honest I couldn't even see it in the video! I assume it was big enough to get a decent sight picture?

Peter - The target is a 3/8" thick plate 36"sq with a 10" or so bull. It's hung by chains form a scaffold frame. If you go to my utube chanel "texasfivegun" or search fivegun you will find more vid's and get a good look at the target.

Again, that's some fine shooting! I shot my .475 and one of my .44s today at 50, 100, and 200 yards. Both my .44 loads and my .475 loads run at about the same speed, but it's amazing how much more drop the lighter .44 bullets have at 200 yards than my 420 grain .475s.

bfrshooter shot this spray paint can at 200 yards with his BFR .475 Linebaugh. One shot to figure out the hold-over, and another to center-punch it. So much for WFNs not being stable at range........ Big Grin

The amazing thing is that the .475 WFN boolit that weighs 420 gr's, has half the drop at 200 yd's then the 265 gr Ranch Dog .44 mag. It is also 99% more accurate. The RD is great to 100 yd's but spreads at 200.
I will get the drop with my 330 gr, .44 boolit later.
Whitworth, post the great target you shot to check sight settings with both of your guns at 50 yd's.

Ok -- I'll post it, but it's not so interesting as it is only 50 yards......this was the last shot I took at 50 yards with my Model 29 after we sighted it in, and the first two shots I took with my .475........the conversation went something like this: bfrshooter: "Aren't you going to change your target?" Me: "No, I'm going to shoot only two shots at this range with the .475 -- and I'm going to put them on top of that last shot with the .44........" Then, I did, quite by accident! jumping

When some one posts that the 44 or 454 shoots flatter at distance than the 475 I know immediately that they have not shot them both at distance and are only parroting the printed drop charts.

Seeing is believing

OK, guys, check this out. I had 8 loads left with my home made 330 gr WLNGC .44 boolit. I used 3 to get sighted at 50 yd's then moved to 200 yd's.
I measured the RD holes from yesterday and it is hard to figure the drop because of the wide group but a close guess is 32 to 34".
I shot the first 2 of my 330 gr and the second shot hit steel. That would be the bottom of my target stand. I checked and it was right at the bottom so the first shot went under it.
I then aimed the last 3 at the very top of the stand. I was a little left but the 3 were in 1-5/16" on the lower target. How is that for a SBH with 57,800 rounds through it?
The drop is 35". I figure the drop of the 420 gr WFN .475 at close to 18".
Someone tell me a WFN is a piece of crap!
Tell me the big boolit drops like a rock! jumping

I make my own molds so the .475 WFN 420 gr Whitworth and I are shooting is my own design. I screwed up because it also will chamber in a Freedom! dancing The .330 gr .44 is also mine.
Now how about all of you shootists posting targets at long range?

Chad, thanks very much! It was your video on long range shooting #3 that showed the target and discussed the size. #5 shows the hits you made in the video that this thread is all about.

A friend brought his kids to shoot this afternoon so I grabbed the .475 for us to shoot.
I put the same can on the rail and took one shot at it off hand at 100 yd's. I hit it at the exact aim point, just above center. The BFR will never stop amazing me.

Our only problem is that Whitworth uses his camera a lot and takes the pictures home so he has to post some for me.
He also has a better camera--- Mad
