A friend of mine has a Ruger Black Hawk in .357 mag. It has a 6" barrel and looks to be brand new (mint). He said he never used it and looking at the gun I would believe him. Anyway I am thinking about buying it from him and selling it down the road. My question is what would be a fair price for it? Thanks for any help! WS

As long as it is one of the new models and not a three screw, anything around $350-$375 is a good number. If it is a three screw it is worth about $100 more...

Why sell it again? It is a wonderful fun gun.

The last one I bought was around $250 in very good shape about 3 years ago. You could look on Gunbroker and see what similar guns are going for.

Thank you very much. The only reason I would sell it is to help generate some money to buy a good packing handgun. Even though this Black Hawk isn't that big size wise I am thinking more in the line of a S&W Mountain Gun or a Ruger 4" Redhawk in .41 or .44 mag for packing. I guess now I must confess my ignorance. What is a 3 screw and what am I looking at to tell? Thanks. W

I would say $250 to $300 would be a fair price. If you're going to make a hole, make it a big one. ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ Member of the Delaware Destroyers Member Reeders Misfits NRA Life Member ENDOWMENT MEMBER NAHC Life Member DSA Life Member

Blue $250 - $300 Stainless a little more. If you are going to pay him a fair price, you should only expect to receive a fair price when you sell it, so unless you are going to tuck it away, and hope for the prices to escalate you are better off just keeping your money for the gun you really want. I see this Black Hawk also has a 9mm cylinder. Is this anything special?

The 3 screw is the old model Blackhawk. When they updated and went with a transfer bar saftey, the design changed to 2 screws. The extra 9mm cylinder is nice and brings the price of the gun up. The 9mm cylinder by it'self can sell from $50-90 on Ebay. The 357 Blackhawk would make a nice packin gun. With the 9mm cylinder it's called a convertible and is a regular catalog item. They do a similar thing with the 45 colt and extra 45 acp cylinder.

I like to send you toward the "dark side" also known as custom guns. I have a .357 Ruger Old Model at a custom gunsmith being converted to .44 Special. You can't find a better packin' gun than that! Conversion cost is some $450, so buying a New Model Blackhawk in .44 Magnum or .45 Colt would be cheaper, but not nearly as much fun to create. With two small bore .357 cylinders, you can improve on perfection, two calibers in one gun, such as 10mm Auto / .38-40, .44-40 / .44 Special combination, or a .45 Auto Rim / .45 Colt combination and so on.
