... but has anyone mounted a compact red dot like the Burris Fast Fire III on a Blackhawk or Super Blackhawk? I know, traditionalist in me is cringing.

I've got one on my BFR 454, but of course they come with a nice Weaver style mounting base. So far has stood up to the recoil of heavy Colt loads (340s @ 1200 fps), but no top of the line Casull loads.
I have a red dot on my Freedom Arms 475 Linebaugh, and a scope on my Ruger Blackhawk in 44 mag. OOPS! Sorry my, S&W!! No problems with either.

I had a red dot sight on my 6.5" 41Mag Blackhawk for a while but decided that I needed magnification so I put a Burris 3X handgun scope on it. The scope had a lens fall or something ( took it back to Burris for warranty repair) but didn't trust it after that, so it wears a different red dot site now. BTW, I shot a running whitetail buck at about 100 yds. with the first red dot on it, but that has been 10 or twelve years ago and the cataracts don't let me see as well anymore. LOL

Yep. Thrown in the towel, most of the rifles will be getting scopes. Any distance and a dark target, if it doesn't move, can't tell if I,m hitting or missing. A bow, you can see the fletching sticking out. Did a little impromptu plinkin with the Blackhawk couple weekends ago, heading home, found myself thinking real hard that it might be time to start looking at the red dots..
I wish there were a simple mount for my Fastfire on a Super Blackhawk, but I don't know of one at this point. Surely someone will get around to this -- and sell a bunch of them. I'd rather not hang a hunk of Picatinny on there; the new sights are so compact that it would sort of defeat the purpose. David, your sight mount is the nuts.

I am going to order one of the little red dot mounts for my Freedom Arms 97. I have a buddy who has switched to that on his model 83 and loves it. Now I just need to decide on the little Trijicon or the Leupold.
I've fast fires (1, II, III) on 3 SRH (454, 480R) Kimber 1911 (460Rowland),G20, BFR 475. I'm somewhat familiar w/the issues but some time back I did mtnt one on a SBH Hunter and as it was too far fwd for my taste I got rid of it as even w/a scope it was worse holstering issues etc. I was having some life issues for a long while and then relocating I've not been able have any hammer time as to render any wisdom as to durability. These are best w/ burris specified mnts/base plates and you can talk to their techies but my experience w/them was so-so several yrs ago. For example they advz to use their base (item 410332) mini 14,Rug 77,SRH but some confusion exists as to fitments. See customers review and resulting discussion at midwayusa for details. The posts by the fella named Rance specifically addressed the use on the SRH. I've successfully mntd a JP Arm JP4 clone of the fast fire on FA83 475 using their mnt but one can experience trouble mixing components as the JP stuff won't mate up w/Burris stuff. A good source of adv is ESA or EGW or something like that as they make an adapter to match them up but I found it to look lil awkwd.
That said, its obvious that I think its worth pursuing as it makes for a small tidy pkg (if not too far fwd)In closing I believe RedHawk1 has alot of experience at this perhaps he'll come frwd tho it seems a long while since he posted

I used a lil' mt frm FA for my 83 and it wudn't accommodte the fastfire so used a JP4 unit really neat.

You might also consider the Primary Arms micro dot. They are considerably cheaper than the top brands and many people have good reviews of them. Aimpoint is better BUT $400 better???

I am 72, WAY past normal open sights. What I carry most is a S&W Mountain Gun with a J-Point Reflex Sight mounted where the rear sight was. J-Point makes a neat replacement mount fitting in the same slot for the rear sight. Another thing I am trying out is a rear peep sight on my Ruger Blackhawk. Really works great just not as fast as the red dot. But it is always on and no batteries.
Being that I am a true gun nut, I have accumulated a few reflex and red dot sights. The Trijicon RMR does not need a battery either but for me it looks a little dim at night. I have a Aimpoint Micro H-1 that claims 5 years of battery life. It looks too large to me for a handgun. My Burris Fastfire uses a battery and like the Aimpoint, has to be turned on. The Leupold DeltaPoint has a battery but it turns on when you move it. It would be my favorite but does not have a light weight mount for my handguns. That is also a problem with the Trijicon, Aimpoint and Fastfire.

Bill, I recently went through the same reservations about putting a reflex(Fastfire lll) on my X Frame (460). It goes against my idea of a revolver, but it will have me handgun hunting again! memtb
