I am considering using my 45 Super with 250gr-260gr bullets. I expect to get just under 1000fps velocity at the barrel. I want a bullet with good terminal ballistics out to 100 yards. Recommendations please? Thanks

At that muzzle velocity you do not need a real stout bullet to perform very well on game. In fact from what I have seen, the super premium bullets are almost a disadvantage at lower velocities. I would highly recommend three bullets for deer size game, the 250 gr XTP, the 250 gr Speer Gold Dot HP and the 260 gr Speer HP. None of these bullets are what you would call tough(except maybe the GDot) bullets but they are designed for use in the 45 Colt at velocities from 1000 fps to around 1250 fps. They would work great in your 45 Super and should feed very well also which is a problem with semi-autos. If your going to be hunting larger game then deer, which with such a load is a pretty poor idea in my opinion, the 250 gr Speer Gold Dot HP would be a very solid choice again if it feeds well. This bullet expands easily but in a controlled manor and has a bonded core design so there will never be a jacket/core seperation. I have used all of these bullets on game up to 300 pounds and have been happy everytime. Now for your range goals. Personally, I would limit my shooting to 75 yards at the farthest with an open sighted handgun of this power level. On deer size game I am sure they would do teh job at 100 yards but they really start loosing velocity at longer ranges and penetration as well. Just a personal opinion, not telling you what you should or should not do. Good Shooting!!! 50

What will you be hunting? For deer, feral hogs, peccaries, coyote, pronghorn and cougar: I think the partition gold would be good if you wanted to use a commercial bullet. The Partition Gold opens quickly and seems to open at lower velocities, but still retains weight for good penetration. The gold dots may be too tough. I, personally, would choose a 250 or 260 grain cast semi-wadcutter. David

I would agree with Fifty. I settled on the 250 gr XTP in my 45 Colt, loaded to about 1350 fps and have had no problems with it. In fact, I also use the 180 gr XTP in my 10mm Auto for both competition and hunting. They are very accurate for me, and I am very happy with their performance on critters the size of deer and smaller. At your velocity levels, the XTP or Gold Dots will work nicely. maxman

You might also try the 225 grain Speer HP. Not a real heavyweight but at 1200 fps from a .45 Colt they mushroom perfectly, loose no weight and penetrate deeply. They are also one of the most accurate .45 bullets I have used. At only 1000 fps muzzle velocity by the time you hit something at 50 yards velocity will be down in the 800s and you won't get any expansion from a JHP bullet. If that is ok with you try the 260 grain hardcast from Cast Performance Bullet Company. It's a LBT design and a heavy hitter. Have used this bullet in a .454 and it's very accurate and left no lead behind. If you can get it to feed it might be the way to go. Bob
