I need a holster for a new SW 29. I think I would like a kydex of some kind. Garrett maybe? Any suggestions will be appreciated.

A S&W model 29 begs for nice leather, you can't go wrong with one from Mike Barranti or Rob Leahy, they both do excellent work. Kydex will work but its kind of like rubber stocks on a model 29 instead of wood.

Thanks for those suggestions. I intend to get a nice one as well. Thinking kydex at the moment because this will be worn hog hunting and a nice one may not be nice long Big Grin

Don't get quite so close to the hog and a nice one will last longer! Smiler

Check out Triple K. I own two of them, both leather thumbreak holsters. I highly recommend them, especially if you don't want to spend big $$$. Take a look at the #440 Lightning Two Way over at www.cowboyneeds.com/440.html

That is a viable option. The gun is actually a 629. (not that that matters) but the barrel is not a standard configuration. Here's what I want to holster :

I have to agree with the nice leather holster. I make my own and admire the work of others. A leather holster with some honest wear is a thing of beauty. I made one for a Security Six wth the factory 2 3/4 inch barrel that had a split loop so I could put the side belt loop of my levis in between the loops to hold it steady. I used it for over ten years and really regret selling it with the gun. It went out in the desert, up in the mt's, fishing, all places where it could get scratched up. It only added to how much I enjoyed putting it on. Get the holster that speaks to you wether you consider it "fancy" or not and use it like it was intended. Nylon and Kydex don't have any soul. DW

I've had nylon, which splits the stitching. I've had kydex, which degrades and cracks. I've had leather and it just keeps on going strong. A good leather holster will easily outlast you... salute

I'll also throw Mernickle's name in the hat.
I've got a couple of his and really like them.
Give him a call and he can make you anything. He just did an old west rig for my N Frame 45 Colt Mountain Gun...it's nice!

El Paso Sadlery has some nice stuff too. I look through them all from time to time to inspire myself to better quality, more artistic and better function in the ones I make. Oh, I agree with Mernikle's name also. I am not familiar with Barranti or Leahy. A good leather holster that functions the way it should becomes like an old friend. Except all they need is a little saddle soap every now and then. DW

Ditto on Mernickle. Quality stuff, highly recommend. I got a FC13 Ref 2 for my 41 Mag RH. Crossdraw is nice for woods walking & hunting.
