Favorite .284 bullets on game?

Hi everyone,

I just picked up a 7mm IHMSA and am looking to shoot a few hogs and some deer. I've heard that the 120 gr Nosler BT is the go-to bullet in 7mm, and I've ordered a few boxes. I've also heard that the 139 Hornady BTSP is too hard for handgun velocities, which is a shame, as I have a bunch of them.

What .284 bullets have you used on game and what were your results? What's your favorite bullet weight?

My go to bullet in 7mm is the Speer 130 grain SP. This bullets leaves the muzzle of my 7 GNR at 2520 fps. and is super accurate. Every animal taken with the 7 GNR has fallen to one shot.

What is the parent case for the 7 GNR?

The 7 GNR is based off of the 7-30 Waters. The shoulder is blown out and has a 40 degree taper, basically an Ackley Improved version of the 7-30 Waters. Any 7-30 Waters or 7 TCU can be re-chambered.

It sounds like the 120 gr NBT and the 130 gr Speer are the consensus choices. I've ordered some of the BT; if they don't work out in my pistol, I'll give the Speer bullet a try.

Thanks everyone,

Smiler

analog,

Don't pass over all of the 140gr bullets. The Nosler BT at the impact velocities you will be getting work VERY well, as do the SST, and the standard flat base Hornady. Use the plastic tips for deer and goats, and the others for hogs, they should all shoot very well.

I didn't get a picture of the doe I shot at 287yds with my 7x30, but is bowled her over like she was hit by a truck. She made one leap and was done. A VERY large boar soaked up a 140gr BT at about 40yds and took another round at about 3" from my 25-06 to finish as he was about to share the pain to put him down. He still had enough to make it about 15yds and turn to come back before collapsing in a heap.

It was of no fault of the bullet, simply one tough as hell old hog.

I use RL-15 in my Waters and it has worked very well over several different bullet weights and has shown excellent accuracy out to 300yds. I settled on the 140's at around 2250fps for my all around load. They hold up well and pack a whollop.

Good luck with your loads.

That's great news about the 140 NBT and the SST; it's always nice to have as many options as possible. When you say flat based Hornady, do you mean the 139 gr bullet?

Yes, I first used them for fire forming as I had a couple of boxes a friend gave me. They shot very well even for that grouping around an inch or so at 100yds. We were cleaning up some stuff around my friends barn one evening after a bit of shooting and here came a few hogs almost right to us. I only had a few FF loads on hand so I dropped the hammer on one and down he went.

The bullet never touched a bone going in or out simply squeezed between a couple of ribs. The entry was hardly visible but the exit was about the size of a quarter. Internal damage was nothing to jump up and down about but was plenty to drop the hog at about 80ds.

That was the only critter I have taken with them but given nothing other than hide and lungs were hit, the expansion I would say was plenty. Also these were only running about 2K from the muzzle so anything else would seem to add to the performance.

Hope this helps. and good luck with your loads.

I did notice that Barnes has a .284 110 gr TTSX cataloged this year ...

Certainly food for thought.
