In my opinion, the 460 S&W is what the 454 and 480 would like to be when they grow up. The 460 S&W with 200 grain bullets shoots quite a bit flatter making it a 200 yard game getter in an accurate weapon. Of course, the 460 has a bit more recoil than the other two little guys.

What is your "hunting style" and what type of handgun were you considering in the .454 and the .480 Ruger? Scope, no scope?

I have two 460 Mags. I can load heavy cast bullets and shoot them as fast as a smaller 454 or 480 bullets and the accuracy is great. I am getting 1 inch groups at 100 yards with 300 gr. hard cast bullets, oh did I tell you they were fast.

Seriously, I think the 460 Mag is an awesome round. I sold my 454 Casull's, 44 Mags when I got the 460 Mag. I could not see me ever going back to either one of them guns. The 460 Mag has an advantage over them as far as case capacity. I had 5 of the 460 Mags, I set them up with scopes and 3 of my buddies bought them off of me. They only use there 460 Mags also for hunting. I still have 2 of them and won't sell them. They are tack drivers. Get the 460, you won't regret it. JMHO Big Grin

I love the caliber concept and the guns are really cool, but I like a carry revolver and that just ain't it.

I was in your same position. I wanted a 480, got talked into 454, then bought a 460. I didn't like the S&W revolver. It was just to big. Sold that, and got an Encore in 460 off of this sight. I'm still not sure that I like it. I don't need a 200yd handgun, and inside of 100yds, I personally don't think it offers anything over some of the "shorter" rounds.

It's a good caliber, but I just didn't warm up to it like I thought I would. I'm considering either trading it to my father-in-law for his Contender and 2 barrels, or selling it to buy a BFR in 475\480.

To me the purpose of a handgun is to be portable and the x-frame just isnt that. Before you go and spend the $ on a 460 then find out you dont like it and by the time you lose money on a trade to get something different you can buy a freedom arms or a conversion from Reeder Custom Guns or Bowen etc. in .475 linebaugh. I believe that the .475 linebaugh is one of the best all around hunting calibers there are. You can load it to put down buffalo and elephant or to shoot whitetail.

I own the S&W 500 and 460 Perfromance shop versions with the 6 1/2 in barrles. If I lived in the lower 48 the 460 rocks! It is perfect for longer shots at smaller animals.

My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

I know what you mean, I also own both the 460 and 500 Mag, matter of fact I own two of each. A 5 inch and a 7.5 inch 460 Mag and a 6 inch and 4 inch 500 Mag. I had a Freedom Arms 454 Casull, but sold it when the S&W 460 Mag came home with me.
