It really is a versatile cartridge.

I think I'm giving John Ross another call after the gun show this weekend, if I move a few things I don't shoot much (like I hope to), and I'll make me a barrel nut for me that's only flat and indexed vertically on each side to keep the cylinder/forcing cone tolerance tight yet improve the aesthetics. Only needs two wrenching flats.

You bastards! Looks like I'll be needing more dies and molds too...

Yesterday is history but tomorrow isn't a mystery as it's hopefully going to bring me a .500 and related bench things in the near future.

Start commenting in thread by asking myself "why, you've already got enough big bores?" and end wanting one...DAMMIT!

And I want to make sure that the BBL is long enough that if I hunt in a state with barrel length restrictions I'm covered (IIRC, some states have a 6" length restriction?)

I certainly don't need it for defense carry here in the lower 48 - I've got a S&W 357PD in .41 mag for that.

Also, I tried looking up trajectories on the 500 - from the interwebs reports it's reportedly fairly flat shooting...but from trajectory calculations this thing looks like a 200 yard rainbow. Am I off base here?

BTW, The Wifey's on board with this - not that I needed to ask. But it sure is nice when the Wifey buys in on things! Direct Quote: "Before Obama takes office, are you SURE there isn't anything else you need?" (Eat yer hearts out Boys!)

At 200 yards, pushing a 420 grain bullet out of the muzzle at 1,350 fps, I only get 18-inches of drop with my .475 and I can't imagine that the .500 is any different -- certainly not rainbow-like with regards to the trajectory. I say go for it!

I'm thinking the Ross version wouldn't be any more or less "packable" than my Para 14-45s are at the moment...

The temptation is strong.

If sales go well tomorrow and/or Sunday...I just might try a sip of the .500 Kool-aid.

Only two evening drinks because the gun show to sort finances for the Ross special concept to work is dependent on being able to legally be there.

I was playing around with a BFR 500 S&W at Great Northern Guns the other day , It was an 8 " barrel and I was VERY IMPRESSED with it ...The free wheeling cylinder , good trigger , and I guess I,m so used to the weight of the Freedom Arms 454 7 1/2" that I really thot the BFR 500 was a scosch lighter ........ Price was good on it also .....it would be a good gun to have as it could be throttled down to Linebaugh ect velocities and would probably last for a hundred thousand rounds .

.If it can,t be grown , its gotta be mined ....

I have a BFR in 500 Mag and I love the gun. It is a very accurate gun. I had it cut down to 6 inches. It is one of my favorite handguns.

Ok, Ima gonna go back to the Gun Shop and go check out their 500's again. There's something about cigar-sized cartridges that's just so stinking lovely!

There is really no good reason to not buy/own/shoot/hunt with a 500mag

The recoil is irrelevant when hunting, and it's a hunting round, the guns are for the most part (save for the little snubbies) hunting revolvers.

They're capable of tremendous energies and spectacular accuracy.
They're also a treat to shoot with light bullet, light load ammunition.

I just don't see the point in not getting one.

Weekend went ok.

I'm going to order a J Ross special, make me a barrel nut I like with two flats, and order me dies and molds.

Peer pressure is a bitch!

Lloyd, I bought the S&W 460 end caps that S&W use to sell. I had it machined to fit the S&W 500 Mag, there is about 4 or 5 steps that needs to be done by a machinist.
The problem now is, S&W quit selling the S&W 460 End caps, and I have no clue as to why they did that.
The 460 end caps were machined so they would not fit in a S&W 500 Mag. If you can find a 460 end cap anywhere you can get it do very easily.

My suggestion is take one of the compensators to a machinist, and have them make one with out the holes.

Lloyd here is a like to how it was done.
