My Blackhawk has a 8 inch barrel and I am thinking about scoping it, was thinking of using the Leupold 2-8. Since it will be primarily used in the West.

My father gave me a Taurus raging bull in 454, but I havn't as yet shot it as I am n the other other side of the planet. I guess I'd ask the same question about it. What scope would you put on it?

I have shot a lot of specialty handguns, and this will be my first scoped revolvers.

These are kind of a training wheels guns to see if I want to get into a FA or X-Frame Smith.

If you were building a FA or custom revolver what barrel length would you want for a scoped pistol? 8? 6? 10?

I have two scoped .41 Blackhawks. One is a standard 6.5" and the other a Hunter with 7.5" barrel. Have a Leupold 4X pistol scope on both... I had a 2.5-8 Leupold but found that it was just too much...

The Hunter with the Single-Six Hunter

Blackhawk with Weaver no-drill/tap mount.

As to the Freedom Arms... I have a two 6" 83s in .41 Magnum and .475 Linebaugh. Scoped or unscoped that is all the barrel length I care to carry around. Within reasonable handgun ranges the trajectory between a 6" and 10" barrels isn't going to matter much... But for a straight scoped hunting revolver I guess however long a barrel you want to tote...

.41

.475

I have the Bushnell Elite 3200 2-6X on a 10" FA in .454. I am the limiting factor on that rig. It is extremely accurate. I have 4X Leupolds on various T/Cs and revolvers as well as a couple of 2Xs. They all work well for revolver ranges. The 2-7X T/C and Burris scopes I have on a couple of T/C barrels get me out past the 440 yard mark.

As far as a custom build. I prefer the 5.5 to 6" barrel length on my revolvers.

Thanks guys! Nice guns all!

RJM, what kind of grips are on that blued Blackhawk? I really like them. My father gave me that gun and I had thought about swapping the grip frame out for a Gunfighter, Keith or Bisley type, but I have to say I really like those grips a lot better.

That is a standard Blackhawk frame, no?

If you want to be able to shoot the thing off-hand, then it needs to be as light as possible. I prefer a 6" barrel and a lightweight red dot or reflex sight to a heavy scope.

The grips on the Blackhawk are from Herrett's...not sure what model... They are very comfortable to shoot.

Thanks I ordered a couple different sets that Midway had in stock. I"ll have to wait until I get back to get the gun measured so I can get a good leather rig for it.

What leather do you carry your scoped pistols in?

I ordered one of those Weaver scope mounts, and a Simmons scope.

I am on the other side of the planet, and I talked to my father this morning he said that the scope I thought was a pistol scope was a rifle scope. I can't remember what I did with the Leupold pistol scope.

MOA,

If the gun is to remain scoped with conventional glass, or at least the majority of the time, I prefer 7.5 barrels and longer. For the guns that'll run irons or a red dot, I like 5.5-6" guns.

I have the 2.5x8 Leupold on my 10" FA in .454, and similar to MSHitman, I am the limiting factor in that gun's performance.

On my 7.5" M83 in .44, I have the 2x6 Elite with the T'SOB base and rings.

Same set up as the 44 on my 252 (.22 on the 83 frame).

On my 7.5" M97 in .41, I opted for the Lovell mount and the Leupold FX-II 4X, as the smaller framed 97 felt better with the smaller optics and streamlined mounting system.

For the carry, I have everything from Pistol Packaging Bandito holsters, Uncle Mikes, Wyoming Combination Holsters, Simply Rugged, etc. Would you prefer a chest or bandolier-style carry?

My BH is 6.5" and my RH is 5.5", both .41 Mag, both naked. My SRH, 7.5" 44 Mag, has a 2x Nikon Monarch. I have a Nikon Encore 2x7 on a T/C Contender with a 12" 30-30 barrel and a Leupold 4x on a 10" T/C .22 LR barrel. I think a variable EER is too much on a revolver, but that is my humble opinion.

I like 5.5 inch barrels usually but prefer 6 to 7.5 inches for scoping. I also prefer fixed power scopes for big game. Red dots, 2,3,and 4 power glass. Once had trouble with the 4 power being too much glass for the range the animal was at. Used the whole thing as an aperture/peep sight and scored. tu2

I use a Leupold 2X in a Lovell mount on my model 83 FA 41 but I step up to the 4x on my 414 Supermag with the 7 1/2" barrel. I had Alan Harton rebuilt the topstrap to match a FA so it uses the Lovell mount as well.
