I want to try some of the boolits I use for the chickens in BPCR. One of my home made moulds. They weigh 414 gr's when I cast with a hard alloy. I made a bunch today and need your best load and powder for a heavier boolit. I have been shooting my 317 gr with good accuracy but want to try these. I have to crimp in the top grease groove as they don't have a crimp groove. I am very short on powders and money so I don't want too large a range to work with. I have 4198, 4759 and a few others. I don't want to go slower then 4198 but don't want a real fast powder either.
Any suggestions?

I worked up a few loads with 4198 today. I started at 33 gr's and so far have shot to 36 gr's. I was shooting Creedmore and as soon as I got to 34 gr's I had to switch to two hands off the bench. First time I ever had a revolver try to leave my hand! I shoot thousands of heavy (up to 440 gr's.) boolits and loads from my .475 without anything like this. Even the front sling swivel band was moving down towards the muzzle with each shot and it was TIGHT. As heavy as the gun is, I can only determine it is inertia, can't stop that big hunk of steel when it heads back and it comes back FAST.
I am going to work up to 40 gr's to see if I get any sticky cases. So far they fall out.
Best so far was 36 gr's with an 1-3/8" group at 50 yd's. Looks like I have to put on the glove!

I looked at one at Gander Mountain last knight it would be a nice addition to my relvolver collection. How fast are you shooting? How would you say they compare to a FA for quality? I know they are about 1/2 the price but if they are as strong I may just have to buy one.

My 45-70 shoots a 317 gr boolit at 1535 fps with 31 gr's of 4759 and is extremely accurate to 500 meters. I have shot many groups under 1" at 75 yd's. I just wanted to try my BPCR chicken boolit. I don't think the rifling is right for the heavy ones. Don't get me wrong, they shoot pretty good but not as tight as I want. Could just be the boolit design. I didn't chronograph them because I only do that after finding a good load. I have since gone to 40 gr's of 4198 with no pressure signs, cases fall out. 36 and 38.5 shot good.
I have shot 300 gr Hornady's extremely tight at 50 yd's. Some loads approached 1800 fps.
My .475 has put 5 shots into 5/8" at 50 yd's and 1-3/4" at 100 yd's.
I have friends with Freedom guns and I outshoot all of them, the BFR will darn well SHOOT even if it isn't as pretty.
Freedom has a problem in that they try to fit every caliber into one frame size. The Freedom .475 will not even chamber a lot of boolits because they stick out the front of the short cylinder. The twist is too slow for heavy boolits too. 350 gr's is the best for accuracy where my BFR will shoot from 400 to 440 gr boolits very accurately. The BFR's will take any boolit you can think of.
It looks like the BFR is cast by Ruger and all the internal parts are Ruger, then it is fit and assembled by Magnum Research to tighter specs. (I don't know who does the work.) It is a very strong gun. If I was rich I would have one of each of all the BFR's. But then again, I love the Freedom guns and would have a bunch of them too. Just have to accept their shortcomings.

I've been using IMR but tried both. The gun just doesn't like heavy boolits. They are way more accurate then needed for hunting, but I am after real small groups. The real problem is that I can't shoot them from Creedmore because of the recoil. When I put the gun on bags, I can't get the groups. This thing is touchy from bags.

Not yet, I am on a pension and it is hard to buy everything. I had to sell guns to get the BFR's. That's why I ask for help, to cut down the cost. Also why I make my own moulds.
