Looking to scope my Ruger 480 for my next trip to Moz in July. Any suggestions?

How long do you anticipate your shots to be? Have you considered a red dot as an alternative?

Max 100 yards if that. I would pass on anything further until I get comfortable at that range. Had not considered a red dot. Should I?

Jim, I prefer them to scopes on handguns. I just have trouble with the long eye relief. With the red dot while you have no magnification, I have found them to be vastly superior to all else in low-light and they can be shot well offhand (I don't shoot scoped handguns well offhand).

I had a simmons gold medal 2-7 on my .480. I find a variable handgun scope really helps with shooting small groups with a revolver.

I have a Leupold 4x EER (T/C .22LR barrel) and a Nikon 2x EER (SRH .44 Mag)and one T/C barrel (30-30) that carries a Nikon 2-7x variable EER. A quality 2x EER would be my choice on a .480 SRH.

I'll second using a red dot sight. They are great for shots inside a 100yds and are much quicker to use than a EER scope.

I, too, prefer a red dot on a handgun. And there is a 2x magnification red dot scope from TruGlo that I am using on my 10" 44 mag Encore single shot. Since they weigh 8-10 oz. less than a LER scope, they are easier to shoot offhand.

Thanks guys. Do you see any issue with travel through SA with a red dot given their propensity to scrutinizing hand guns without scopes?

Jim, it's not an issue when they look like a scope like the Ultradot 30. My concern with other brands is their ability to handle recoil. This Ultradot is on my .500 Linebaugh that shoots 500 grain bullets at 1,200 fps, and before that it went through an intensive load development on a revolver in .500 JRH and before that it resided on a .475 Linebaugh and survived literally thousands of rounds of 420s at 1,350 fps. I have abused this optic and given it no quarter.

And it has been in on a lot of game killin'!

I am also one that favors a Ultra-dot over EER scopes on handgun.

Jim, the gun comes from the factory with 25mm units. But, Ruger will swap them for 30mm rings like the ones I am using. They are tough to beat IMO.

Just called Ruger. They are 'swapping' them out for me. You have been a wealth of info..thanks! Now for a chest holster? I have a Galco Kodiak but NOT the scoped version. What do you like?

Whit, I'm having a another issue with my Ruger 480 and the sight. I ordered the Ultradot 4, 30mm and the 30mm rings from Ruger that you suggested. The rings do not accommodate the scope. My gunsmith told me to order the rear ring with an extension..or offset. Ruger does not make these for the 30mm?? Any suggestions? Is there another Ultradot I should have ordered?

Jim, the Ultradot 4 will not fit between the rings of the SRH. The Ultradot 30 will. In order to use the 4, you will have to use a base like those offered by Weigand.

Is there anything wrong with running an ultradot 25 in the rings that come with the gun?

No, I just personally like the larger field of view.

Im going to try an Ultradot on my 475, I like the accuracy with the scope but do not like the size and handling in the field.
