I just received confirmation from Magnum Research that their new .500 S&W will be on the .45-70 length frame.....personally, I was hoping for an intermediate sized platform (ie, Ruger Maximum length), but oh well.....at least it's a single-action. Lee Martin www.singleaction.com

quote:I have talked with David Clements about small cartridge in a large cylinder. My example was a .50 AE round as extra cylinder in a .357 Max convert in .500 S&W. He told me I'll have in all case poor accuracy with small cartridge in a large cylinder. May be BFR will made a small cylinder in this huge frame and put an internal extension of barrel to fill the gap. I'm not excited to see the new BFR in this caliber.

David's right......since a cylinder isn't rifled, you essentially have free-bore before the bullet hits the barrel. Again, I was really hoping that they'd use a smaller frame for the .500 S&W. Not sure I'll buy one on the .45-70 version. Lee Martin www.singleactions.com

I saw one of the earlier 45-70's and it has a shorter cylinder with the bbl extending back into the frame window. doesn't look right to me. The 45-70 has a bit of free bore, about 1/2" in my loads. Mine is quite accurate though. I also was hopeing for a maximum length frame. I guess I'll have to send my Ruger max off and have a 475 long built. I need to get a job first though.

Lar45, I guess I'll have to send my Ruger max off and have a 475 long built. I need to get a job first though.[/QUOTE] You can have a .357 Max convert into .500 S&W but the case will be trimmed to 1.610" instead of 1.625" in the S&W X frame.
