Mauser 98 – 3 Position Safety
Part # 983R

A new machined sleeve from Chrome Moly Steel. This safety has the side swing lever like the Classic Winchester M70. A Precision machined unit that is left polished in the white for final finishing. The sleeve has been machined from pre heat treated steel, while the lever has been carefully heat treated and tempered for long life. This allows for low scope use, while retaining the gas deflecting design and shape of the Mauser sleeve. It will upgrade the Mauser 98 and many of its various variations. This Safety will not fit the models 1891, 1893 1894, 1895, 1896, Siamese Mauser, or the Husqvarna Improved Mauser
Positive detents in the lever for the FIRE (forward) safe (middle) positions. The middle position is safe, while allowing the bolt to be opened and the rifle unloaded. Moving the lever all the way to the rear position, (safe) forces the plunger forward which locks the bolt from opening, and puts the lever in the rear SAFE position.
This safety uses the original firing pin, firing pin spring, and cocking piece as well as the old sleeve lock, and spring.
Requires installation by a qualified person, minor machining work is required to the rear of the bolt and the cocking piece for proper installation. Detailed fitting instructions are included with each safety. A spare safety plunger, safety plunger spring, and cross pin are supplied. This Safety is 100% made in the USA, from USA sourced steel.
Also as of Jan 2024, Siamese and HVA safeties are available, inquire
Installation is available, inquire

Cost is $ 190 per safety, plus $ 10 shipping and Insurance

The way I figured it probably one of the best guys to install the safety is the guy who made it.
Here is a photo of one installed by Jim Wisner on my Mark X barreled action

Hello, two questions about the 98 Mauser three-position safety:

Is the safety compatible with a Canjar set trigger, please?

What might be the price to supply safety, install and reblue. Please?

Thanks in advance.

Last 2 inquirys answered

As I only hot blue 3 to 4 times a year that is why the bulk of my safeties are supplied in the white.

Once the safety is fitted to the bolt, cocking piece and trigger, and sometimes to the tang.
The proper method would be to then blue the safety after all the fitting

Yes.

The Brno 21 is simply another variation of a M98 action.

Hi James,

Do you or anyone you know of make a M70-type safety for the Ruger M77?
A professional hunter in Africa asked the question after bumping his safety which jammed his M77 action during a dangerous game shoot.
