Get some CBs for your 22lr. The boy gets to shoot something besides a BB gun, they are just as quite and more fun.

PS: I started at three years old my little brother was two. Winchester 22 single shot, prone postion, with about four inches of buttstock under my armpit. Wished there had been something like a very small 22s avalible now.
