I have a 1 kilogram tin of Winchester WMR powder but cannot find any loading data. Does anybody have any loads for 30.06. Thanks. Mark

Mark, I also have a can of Winchester MAGNUM RIFLE POWDER. And, no data for its use. I just finished asking Winchester (at their website) about its use. Hope they respond with some useful data. Should they come up with something useful, I'll be sure to post it. Failing that, maybe someone here has one of their RELOADER'S GUIDES featuring this powder. What about it, guys? Got any data for MAGNUM RIFLE POWDER from Winchester (NOT the MRP, from Norma!)? Any cartridge, or a comparable powder with similar characteristics/burn rate, so data can be extrapolated?????????????????

Yeah, don't use MRP data with WMR. I thought MRP = WXR (= RL-22), anyway. RSY

For the 30-06 Winchester's #15 reloading booklet shows 55.7 gr. of WMR with a 200 gr. bullet for a velocity of 2435 FPS at 48,200 PSI. For a 220 gr. bullet, 55.7 gr. for 2380 FPS at 51,100 PSI. The latest Hornady book shows 57.8 gr as a max load with 220 gr. bullet and 2500 FPS. Seems like you could go a bit higher than that. It is said that WMR and H-450 are different lots of the same powder just as W-760 and H-414 are different lots of, again the same powder. I find it strange that H-450 and WMR were both discontinued at the same time. I have a goodly supply of WMR and it is a good powder in the .300 Win. mag. and the .270 Win. with 150 gr. bullets. I'm wondering if Winchester (or their subsidiary) is reserving that powder for use in their short magnums? I would think that it would be a very good one in those rounds. I do notice that for most cartridges, most of the loading manuals gave WMR short shrift when it was available as have the "egg-spurts" in the gun rags. Seems to me, the same thing happened with Hodgden's H-205 back in the 1980's. In discussing it with their rep at an NRA convention, he said, "Frankly, the numbers weren't there." Damned bean counters anyway. I wonder if this wasn't just another case of the bean counters striking again? All I will say about the powder is,in my .300 Win. mag., my load delevers 2950 FPS from a 26" barrel with a 200 gr. Speer Hot-Core. Accuracy is .75" at 100 yards and I dropped a cow elk at 530 yards laser measured with that load. I'm happy with that powder. Maybe Winchester ought to get their heads out of their collective asses and bring it back. FWIW, looking in my Hodgden #25 manual, I find the data for H-450 is quite similar to the WMR data. for the 200 gr. bullet, max load is 56.0 gr vs 55.7 from Winchester. For the 220 gr. bullet, 57.0 gr. of H-450 vs 55.7 for Winchester. Seems to me that it may be possible to use data for H-450 and carefully work up to a max for your rifle. The Hodgden #25 gived data for H-450 for bullets from 110 gr. to 225 gr. Best I can do for you. Paul B.

I have two unopened one pound canisters of WMR and If anyone is in or near the Lincoln, Nebraska area they are welcome to it or if you have something of equal value (they're marked $16.95) that you want to swap (bullets?). Can't see doing load development with a powder that's gone by the wayside, but if you have a pet load that needs it, like I said, come and get it. I'd send it but can't imaging it'd be worth the HAZMAT hassle/cost to you. R

Thank fellas, that is a good start. It is certainly a nuisance when thy drop powders paticularly as I'm too tight to throw it out. Mark

Mark. Don't feel bad. I still have half a can of W-785. I've never found it to be worth a damn in anything. I got lucky on WMR though. I found an 8 pound can at a gun show right after I found out it had been discontinued. I also went to every gun shop and bought up all I could find. I think it might have been Grafs that had a bunch of WMR in 8 pound cans for around $40, give or take not too long ago. I was tempted to pick up a couple of those as well to augment my supply. I really like the powder as it does just about anything that the 4831 types do, and runs through a powder measure like pork fat through a goose. Paul B.

Thanks for the data Steve, a very good resource. The only use I found for 785, Paul, was to lay a trail of it in the yard and burn it for the kids entertainment. Mark
