My friends a question, where would you place H5010 on the buring rate chart with the newer powders? I am especially curious about the VihtaVuori powders. I am building a 264 Win Mag and was told on another site that H5010 was a great choice with the 140`s. H1000 should be in the mix as well. As this is an older discontinued powder I cannot find it on a current chart. Many thanks. Tim.

It`s a few numbers down the chart from H1000, right between Norma MRP and AA8700. VV24n41 and VV20n29 follow AA8700.

I read somewhere that H5010 was replaced with H50BMG. I'd check with Hodgdon Powder to confirm this.

Surplus 5010 can still be had for cheap from various sorces. Hodgdon originaly packaged surplus 5010 as H5010, as the powder sources became increasingly scarce they began the manufacture of a replacement, 50BMG. As far as burn rate put the surplus 5010 slowest but the new 50BMG on par with H870 and AA8700, at least so I've been told.

Does anyone know where surplus WC872 stands, it should be slower than H870 and AA8700 but is it slower than the 5010.

My experience, primarily in a .264 Winchester, is that 5010 is little, if any, slower than H870 and H570. Because of it's large grain size, it is very inconvenient to use in something like a .264 as every charge must be weighed and then it's a pain to pour through a funnel (always bridging and shutting down the flow; it would be impossible in a drop-type measure).

WC 872 has given me outstanding results in a .264 with 140's, and also in a 7STW with 175's. It is significantly slower than H870-570-5010, etc, requiring a compressed load for best performance (but work up cautiosly in your own gun!) Lots of surplus powder do vary, but in the lots I have worked with, WC 872 is no slower than WC 860 (again, prove this in your own gun -- don't just take my word for it!)

If you have a chronograph and a good sense of reading pressure signs in a rifle you've worked extensively with, you can cook up some excellent loads for large-capacity cases with WC 872.

Thanks Guys, I was wondering about govt. surplus as an option. What speed did the 140`s give with the 872 Stonecreek? There is a guy named Jeff Bartlett that sells surplus powder, any other sources??

In my 270-300 Ultra with 135 MK I'm now at 3750 fps. Using 103gr WC872 and still a bit of empty space left, I have some loaded up to 108gr w/space left over, but I don't know if I will make it that far. Going to the range this thursday, weather permiting, will find out then.

My 24" Sako gets 3150 with a 140 grain Nosler. This barrel is 35 years old and has enough throat erosion that it will accept larger charges than most, so I won't mention the weight of the charge except to say that it is compressed.

I recently acquired a fresher .264 Sako with a 26" barrel. With the same loads it gets about 3250 fps, but those loads show some excessive pressure. I would expect that with the right load of WC 872 a 26" .264 would have no trouble making 3200 fps with a 140 gr. bullet at acceptable pressures. This is equal to what the factories (fraudulently) claimed when the .264 was introduced.

In a 24" 7STW I am getting 3100 fps with a Nosler 175 using WC 872.

Jeff Bartlett is where I got my supply several years ago. There are a couple of others, but I don't have their addresses at my immediate disposal. Perhaps someone else can help. There was a whole thread on the subject of surplus powders under the Military and Surplus heading a few months ago, and several sources were mentioned.

Stonecreek, those are good numbers, the ones I was looking for. My project began with a reamer I had made by JGS throated out where the Sierra 140 bearing surface ended at the neck/shoulder junction, minimum SAMMI everywhere else with a 1 1/2* leade. The action is a 700 Remington and the barrel will be a 26" Krieger #5. I sent along another reamer and action, the 338 RUM was made .090" shorter than the original 300RUM which allows more room in the magazine to seat out bullets. The full lenght 300 RUM case is 2.850" and the 338 RUM is 2.760. I had two reamers on the 338 RUM made, one necked to 7mm and the other to 30 cal. The 7mm 338 RUM was the other reamer I sent. It also will be on a Remington 700 action with 26" Krieger barrel with a 5 1/2 taper. Txhunter you might get a speeding ticket if you aint real careful, that rascal is smoking!!!
