Hello Folks: I'm fishing for some general advice on building a decent elk load for my son's Remington 300 Ultra Mag. rifle. He just bought it a few weeks ago and both of us are just learning about the caliber. I am the handloader for the family and I know exactly nothing about this monster case. My purpose with this letter is to hopefully get some general advice on where to start working up a good elk hunting load.
I have found in the past that asking forum members for some of their experienced help often shortens the length of time and the amount of experimenting I need to do to get good results. All the books, charts, and disks are fine but their is nothing like getting help from people who have first hand knowledge. I try to repay this help by passing on help when I can.
I imagine that my son will be using a 220 grain premium bullet and buckets of powderSmiler Often there are many powders available for a cartridge but a few shine above the others. If I can get lucky and find a member who is experienced with this cartridge and get a powder name and begining load to work from I would consider this a near mirical! So much time and expense can be saved. If someone can help me with this task I will be very grateful. Whether you folks can help me start work on this project or not I hope you have a fun fall hunting season. Take care and be safe. Jim terrobj@mindspring.com

There is no need to use a 220gr bullet as a 180 will shoot flatter, recoil less and is plenty for moose and elk.My rifle performs best with reloader 25.With 96 gr behind a 180gr bullet my gun produces 3375fps and averages 1/2" groups.

Reloader 25 has performed the best for us with either the 180 or 200 partitions. Velocities have been very impressive [Smile]
