Two different shooting questions

This isn't a reloading question but this seemed like the best place for these questions. I'm getting ready to replace the backer boards on my target holders. I've got 4x4's put down and normally use 1/4 or 3/8" plywood for backing board. Other than using cardboard over the plywood, have you found anything better than plywood? It needs to work outside so I think particle board would come apart.

The other question. My range is on the back side of my place. It is perfect for my shooting but I'd like to put in a backstop behind my shop for firing a few rounds occasionally. With the contour of the land, there isn't a backstop that I feel ok with as it is. I'm thinking of building a 4' wide x 4' tall box out of railroad ties and filling it with sand. Should I consider another filler material? I though of building it 6' long. I want to stop centerfire rifle high velocity rounds as well as 500g slugs at about 1400fps.

we run around the countryside after elections and take down the campaign signs. the large ones work well when doubled or tripled in thickness. we have 4x4's in the ground 8' apart so it takes the large sign to fit.

as for a back stop if the sand is free use it other wise dirt and/or round bales of hay work well.

At our local range we use corrugated plastic sheets.
Some of our local real estate agents also use them for their signs its great for all weathers.

I will second the durability of the corregated plastic. It will last a long time, takes staples well and will "close up" after the bullet passes through.

A staggered row of old tires full of sand works well but looks tacky as hell. Black board (insulation board) works pretty well for backing. By the time the weather gets it, its shot up anyway. Its also a whole lot cheaper than plywood or OSB.

My range uses 2x2 wire. Targets go on with clothes pins or what ever. They last along time. They attach it to I beams but it would work great on 4x4s.

At our range we use construction orange wide mess barriers streched between posts and frame, to hold our targets. Works like a charm! Paper targets are held in place with clothes pins.
The webbing last for a very long time and holds up with a lot of hits!

As far as a backstop goes Ithink that a dirt berm will serve you better. Perhaps a framed area will with dirt will do the trick?
