Winchester 69How about a 270 Win sizing die followed by the 240 Weatherby sizing die, trim and fire-form. May need neck-turning or reaming. 280 Rem and 25-06 Rem sizing dies and any of the seating dies can also be used as needed. Redding has a form & trim die if needed. You might check with them to confirm the procedure.

Will the lack of a belt cause any problems?

Bent FossdalSorry, I did not make myself clear.
I want a swaging die that makes a belt on a .30-06 case.
Anyone?
But thanks anyway!

Jim C. <><I've long been interested in doing that but have no .240 Wea. so haven't tried.
I have READ that it can be done with the .240 FL die, good lube and a STRONG press, such as an old RCBS A2 or such. The advice I read was to do it in small steps, moving the die down in small increments after the intial tight spot became appearent. And relube the base after each step - I think the writer suggested STP or lanolin - or you'll be looking for your stuck case remover!
Necking should be easy if you have intermediate FL dies like the .280, .270 and .25-06 and only use the expander on the last step, .240.
If you try it, good luck and let us hear the results, please!

the_captainBent- have you asked this question on the bullet making forum? A lot of those guys have the equipment and knowledge to swage cases as well as bullets.

Allan DeGrootI've SEEN a die made to do that, but I can't remember where....
I know it was an online dealer but I can't remember which one and I can't find it in my bookmarks.

Bent,
From what I have read you could make your own.
Not exactly the same process but I have swaged .444 Marlin brass ahead of the rim to .459 to fit .303 British chambers. The resulting brass lasts much longer but is a real PIA to make. I also split 2 of the steel .44 Magnum size dies in the process of learning how. All this with a Rockchucker.
I would recommend that you make your dies in several steps. It may take a lot of experimenting to get there. Make them out of high tensile steel like an old 700 Remington barrel and keep them at least 1"/25mm OD. 1.5 OD would be better.
You may have to make a frame for a hydraulic jack to provide the push.

snowmanBent I believe it was in one of the Nosler loading manuals but I'm not sure which one. The author of the commentary about the 240 Wby was anxious to try his new 240 out but was waiting for brass to come . He claimed he tried running a 30-06 case through the FL size die and it worked perfect. When I first bought my 240 I tried using 25-06 brass run through the size die. It works for me. Give it a try. One word of caution the internal capacity will be a couple grs less than Wby brass so back off the powder charge 2 or 3 grs. Hope that helps

Bent FossdalIreload,
Yes, I can do it myself, but time is money, and it is easier to buy one.
Snowman, Thanks for input, I was wondering myself if that was possible. If so, I can just buy a FL - die for the .240 and cut off the front half, as my wildcat i straight belted. Probably a lot cheeper than an expencive swaging die!

ireload2Bent,
Sizing dies are hard surfaced low carbon steel.
They will often split if you try to swage a case head. I suspect you could make what you want about as quick as posting here about it.

I made one real quick - it still took an hour, and was not perfect, so i would have to make another one.
We'll see what happens - hunting season is getting closer, and that means rater busy times for a gunsmith.
Thanks anyway!

jeffeossoBent,
www.ch4d.comCALL THEM and you want to talk to Dave (sr). Don't talk to anyone else other than that you want to talk to dave
if it's not an old fart (who is a GREAT guy) on the phone, it's the wrong person.
ask him to make you a scraper die for making a belt in a 30-06 case. DO NOT SAY SWAGING DIE, as it is not truely a swage (pushing things out to make them larger) you are drawing the brass and scraping a new belt
