Loading 45-70 with light "trapdoor" charges.
Have used a fiber fill component as a filler for the large air gap. takes forever.

wondering if a guy could use corn cob media, that we use in tumblers, as a filler instead. Could use a dipper and a funnel just like powder in this case. Would make it easier and faster than fiber fill.

anybody have any reasons why this wouldnt work?

Thanks for your opinions.

I've used corn meal as a filler. Depending on how much filler you need, a piece of poly fill (pillow stuffing) works really well.

I understand Cream of Wheat is the cats meow for filler.

Sharps:

I would stick to a tuft of dacron/poly, particularly in large cases, if it were me. The powder charge will burn it up.

I use corn meal sealed with a little Elmer's glue in the case neck over about 12 grains of Bullseye for case forming and it blows the corn meal out the barrel. But if you were to cap a normal powder charge and corn meal/cob filler with a bullet (particularly in a large case), that powder is pushing a lot more weight/bulk and pressures may exceed a safe charge. Its not worth ruining a good gun, not to mention your face or people next to you at the range.

You only need enough poly to hold the powder at the cartridge base, not a case full.

Sharps-
I use the Dacron Poly filler when I reload my nitro Express cases with RL-15. Now I use a digital scale and weighing th "tuffs" isn't a hassel at all.

I quit trying to "develop" a way to streamline the process, however just grab a bit of the filler, ball it up and place it on the scale works for me. You'll find that you will become adept at the process with just a few trys.

The nice thing about the Dacron is that it is not consumed, rather just spat out the bore.

I use corn cob to clean my brass, I would think it too abrasive for a case filler. I use either Dacron [compressed] or a foam filler I cut out with a chamfered 50 BMG case. I have used a fairly firm foam and a springy foam like what comes some hard rifle cases. Both have worked fine.
Just be sure the foam is slightly compressed by the bullet as you seat it.
